Have you spotted us in Devon Live?
After a somewhat extraordinary year, we are proud to congratulate our foundation degree students on completing a year of study.

Studying whilst working or volunteering in settings with children and young people and juggling everything else life has thrown at them hasn’t always been easy, but according to the students, it’s definitely been worth it.

Class of 2020 - Graduation
The rescheduled graduation ceremonies which should have taken place in November 2020 got underway last week (21st June) at Worcester Cathedral with Social Distancing in force.

Ginny, Trevor and Dawn were in Worcester on Tuesday 22nd June to celebrate with our FdA Teaching and Learning and BA (Hons) Professional Practice top-up degree students, and Tracey was there on Friday 25th June to support our FdSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health and BSc (Hons) Child and Adolescent Mental Health top-up degree students.

From everyone here at The Learning Institute, we'd like to congratulate our education and health students and all the other students on their achievements!
Thank You Tutors!
On Wednesday 23rd June it was National Thank a Teacher Day.

As such we thought this would be a perfect opportunity to share some messages from our students to our hard-working and dedicated Tutors.
Learning and Education student Vicky, who is in the second year of the foundation degree and also one of our ambassadors.
Early Years Professional student Evie, who is in the first year of the foundation degree and also one of our ambassadors.
Learning and Education student Nicolle, who is in the second year of the foundation degree and also one of our ambassadors.

Teaching and Learning June Conference
The Learning group has been working on our application to attend the Teaching and Learning June Conference 2021 at the University of Worcester. Due to Covid this took place online. Our application was accepted and we then had to prepare a 15 minute presentation on Online Blended Learning. A group involving Anne Petherick-Davies, Louise Bennett, Nicolle Courtney (student) and Nigel Sparrow delivered the presentation and then were required to respond to questions from those present. The timings were strict and it was a challenge to fit everything in. It was an enjoyable and interesting experience. We’d like to thank everyone involved in the process for their time and effort at a busy time.
Welcome to our new Apprentices

We are really pleased to have two new apprentices with us. Anna, who is based in Wembury Primary School,  is undertaking the Teaching Assistant Level 3 Apprenticeship and at Sherford Vale, Sam is starting  the Early Years Educator Level 3 Apprenticeship but both will be coming together for some training throughout their programmes. We wish them every success and look forward to working with them over the coming months.

If you would like to find out more about any of our Apprenticeships, please contact or call Ginny Honey on 07956056419

Domestic Abuse Bill

The Domestic Abuse Bill received Royal Assent at the end of April and has now been signed into law. The Domestic Abuse Act will now include a legal definition which will expand beyond physical violence to address a wider range of abuses that may occur within the domestic sphere including extending the coercive controlling behavior offence to include post separation abuse, economic abuse and new protections for victims within the criminal justice and family court system. For the first time, children will also be recognised as victims of abuse; a major step forward as there is a correlation between this and other forms of child abuse.

New Arrivals
It was so lovely to be able to go in the office to wish our Admission Officer Caley the best of luck on her last day before maternity leave.

To help support the team during Caley's maternity, we'd like introduce you to Eva Tappenden.

Eva will be covering Caley’s maternity leave as Admissions Officer and also helping the team with recruitment.

Please take the opportunity to introduce yourself if you get the chance.

Did you know...
...Young children’s thinking has been described as being ‘like the thinking of the most brilliant scientists’?

Alison Gopnik used this phrase to describe the results of her research into the way young children solve problems. When faced with a simple machine called a ‘Blicket detector’, Alison and her team found that 4-year-olds used evidence very efficiently to make the machine light up. Not only did they work this out very quickly, but they worked it out more quickly than adults did.

Alison reminds us that when adults find out about the world, we call the process ‘research’. When children find out about the world, we call it play.

Studying for an Apprenticeship

When you hear the term ‘apprenticeship’ you might think of 16-24 year olds gaining valuable job-specific skills and experience.

However, did you know that there are apprenticeship opportunities for students at undergraduate level and postgraduate level?

If you’re new to a role within education, why not talk to The Learning Institute about how your employer could use the apprenticeship levy to develop your skills and knowledge with one of The Learning Institute’s Level 3 – 7 apprenticeship programmes in business administration, education, early years, improvement and leadership.

Message from Student Services: new Covid-19 hardship fund

Worcester Student Services have extra funds to distribute to students in need of financial help before the end of July. All circumstances will be considered, even if they have already had financial help this year.

It is quick and easy for students to apply for through our online portal: they just need to tell us why they need help and upload one month’s statements for their bank, building society and savings accounts. We will let them know as quickly as we can if we are able to give them an award, and will make any payment directly into the bank account they have registered on their SOLE page.

Visit here to find out more, and for the link to the application portal.

Students can apply, whether they are on campus, at home or coming to the end of their course.
