Reflections on the BAAP
As she nears the end of the BA (Hons) Advancing Practice top-up degree (BAAP), with only her dissertation left to submit, Nicolle reflects on her experience of Level 6.

It feels like only yesterday that I steeled myself into a room to hear about the foundation degrees offered by The Learning Institute. However, it was in fact over three years ago. Earlier today I submitted my final assignment of my undergraduate degree – aside from my dissertation. It has been quite the journey, with a lot of laughs, tears, new friends and amazing opportunities, and whilst knowing I am about to embark on the Nicolle with her fellow students at the November student conferencehome stretch is incredibly exciting it also is somewhat sad. Undertaking a full-time degree for three years has been completely immersive and has left me wondering what there will be to occupy my time after that final May submission date?!

ITT updates
Our trainee teachers successfully completed their 12 week second school placements this term. Following the Easter break the trainees have alternative placement days booked, where they will have the opportunity to visit the key stages before and after the ones in which they are training.

Alongside this, they will gain extra experience by visiting specialist provision such as alternative and special schools. At the end of that week, trainees and their mentors will be attending a conference on ‘Curriculum Thinking’. From 2nd May, the trainees will be heading back to their original placement schools to complete their final nine weeks of training, before graduating on 1st July.

There are some planned changes to the programme moving forward. The Learning Institute is pausing the SCITT provider status, but continuing to deliver primary teacher training in partnership with the University of Worcester. This has been done to strengthen our teacher training provision and meet new quality criteria in the sector. We are looking forward to extending our partnership with Worcester, who accredit our undergraduate degrees, with a course which is very similar in structure to our current programme.

Our teacher training routes are open for applications for a September 2022 start. Training is school-based with placements in Westcountry Schools Trust (WeST) settings, as well as partner schools in Cornwall. Training will include 14 days of online learning and 16 days face-to-face.

Life outside TLI
We love hearing about the things our #TeamTLI learners and staff are involved with outside of The Learning Institute!

Last month Vicky, one of our current BAAP students, was in attendance at the London Irish Rugby game with 35 members of her old school choir. Aged between 7 and 11, the children had been invited to sing 'The Fields of Athenry' as part of a larger choir of children before the game.

She has shared some photos of her experience, telling us that she was extremely proud of the children, who sounded amazing and were fantastic.

Erasmus+ Updates
With the completion of the Erasmus+ project on Adverse Childhood Experience and Interprofessional Working, time is being invested in the Natural Schooling project, which we lead, and in the Creative Digital project, which is managed by the University of Santiago, in Galicia, Spain.

Following on from the successful Natural Schooling transnational meeting in Galicia, that project is continuing to see schools in Spain, Sweden, Italy and the UK exploring ways in which their curricula can make use of the outdoors in children’s and young people's learning. Projects are making use of cameras, video and online mapping to record what they are finding. Regular online meetings between the partners are providing opportunities for sharing discoveries and supporting each other’s progress. The next transnational gathering will take place in Sweden in May where partners will review progress on the project’s agreed intellectual outputs.

The Learning Institute is providing the evaluative expertise needed for the Creative Digital project, which is looking at the use of digital technology in learning. Anne Petherick-Davies is leading the evaluation of the innovations being tried in schools across the member countries, through feedback from students and practitioners. Initial results would suggest that the use of new technologies within the classroom is both motivating and supporting learning. The next transnational meeting for that project will take place in London.

Save the date!
Every year we hold a celebration event for our Level 5 foundation degree students, to recognise and celebrate what an achievement it has been to undertake a full-time degree whilst also juggling jobs, families and so many more commitments. This year, the celebration event will take place online on Saturday 23rd July.

With contributions from tutors, students, and members of staff from both The Learning Institute and the University of Worcester, the celebration event does not replace graduation in anyway, but is an acknowledgement from TLI of what you have achieved.

WALE Conference
On Thursday 17th and Friday 18th March, Ginny Honey (Partnership Liaison Lead) represented The Learning Institute as Sponsor of Wessex Association of Leaders in Education (WALE) at their Spring Conference in Bournemouth.

During this event, Ginny was able to talk with many of the delegates about our programmes including degrees, apprenticeships and the new short courses – all designed to enable the leadership members to develop existing and new staff.

A photo of our stand at the WALE Spring ConferenceMany of the conversations held involved supporting non-teaching staff to progress and evolve within existing roles, as well as using the apprenticeship levy to take on much needed new Teaching Assistant positions. Key challenges to this were raised and TLI will be exploring ways to overcome any potential barriers in accessing funding, and sharing this with the WALE members in the coming weeks.

It was really good to be able to meet with the various head teachers and leaders from a wide range of educational providers in the region and we look forward to continuing our partnership work with them.

The latest in our series of articles introducing key members of #TeamTLI staff.

Hannah Mccormack - Academic ProfessionalHannah

Hannah’s background is in Early Years education, where she was a Special Educational Needs Coordinator and an Early Years’ practitioner for over 14 years. In particular, Hannah coordinated the educational and care provision for young children with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) within mainstream settings.

After taking a short break to care for her young children, Hannah recently joined The Learning Institute as an Early Years Professional academic tutor, and she is also supporting the Standard Lead for our Early Years Educator apprenticeship.

Hannah has a passion for early years education and policy, with a specific interest in inclusive education. She particularly enjoys examining the discourses between policy and practice. Within Hannah’s professional and academic practice, she has a fervent commitment to ensuring a child-centered and inclusive pedagogy. She is a strong advocate of listening to the voices of children and ensuring each child’s voice is expressed and clearly heard in decisions regarding their learning, development and overall wellbeing required.

In addition to her work as a tutor, Hannah is also a student herself and is currently in her second year of a PhD. Her research is focused upon providing an alternative narrative of inclusive education through capturing the voices and lived experiences of young children with SEND in mainstream early years settings.

Hannah lives in Cornwall with her 3 children and, in between working and researching, she enjoys going on outdoor adventures with them and exploring new places.

The Learning Institute, in partnership with the University of Worcester, is offering 16 new short courses* for those who work or want to work with children and young people in education and children’s services. Each short course is worth 30 credits.

Would you like a TLI hoodie?

Following some requests from students, we have liaised with Akuma Sports, and are now trying to gauge student interest in #TeamTLI hoodies. 

We estimate the cost to students being around £28-£30 per hoodie (please note, no profit would be made from these hoodies).  The student hoodies would have The Learning Institute logo on the front, your centre or degree title on one sleeve, and your class (e.g. 'Class of 2022') on the other sleeve.

We are delighted to announce that two new teaching venues for our foundation degrees have been approved for September 2022! 

We're now actively recruiting students for centres based at Harriers Banbury Academy in Banbury and Rivers Academy West London in Feltham, and we'll be holding information sessions at both new centres in the last week of April:

PE Subject Leader’s Four Day Accredited Award
Wednesday 27th April 2022 (9.00am - 4.00pm)

The course looks at leading and managing improvement in Primary PE and is appropriate for colleagues who have a leadership role for PE within a primary school setting. This course will support subject leaders to:

  • Lead teaching and learning
  • Set targets for improvement in PE
  • Make judgements about pupils’ achievement in PE and meet Ofsted expectations
  • Lead sustainable improvement
  • Develop subject knowledge in pedagogy in primary school PE
  • Planning for continuity, progression and assessment
  • Develop advocacy skills in Primary PE

Wild Tribe Subject Leaders Course
