Novemer 2014

Update & Events

Hello TCD Members,

The Gales of November are upon us with winds in excess of 59mph and reported wave heights of 25ft on Lake Michigan last weekend. It appears these gales have also caused great havoc in SE Michigan. This last observation is based solely on the amount of Halloween candy left in our basket and lack of Trick-or-treaters last Friday. Hopefully everyone stayed warm and their kids, grandkids and great grandkids fared better than the ones in my neighborhood.
More importantly we still have some rides left this year. During a similar November gale on Lake Superior 39 years ago, there were 29 brave men aboard the Lake Freighter SS Edmund Fitzgerald that tragically lost their lives on November 10th, 1975. The great sea Gichigami opened her mouth wide and swallowed the 729’ freighter, laying her to rest in 530ffw.

This weekend the club will honor these men during its 27th Annual Edmund Fitzgerald run to Tawas Point State Park.
For those who are not familiar with this event, it is one of clubs longest running traditions. It was originally initiated by club member Dave MacFarlane back in 1987 and has continued on ever since.

We will be camping (or staying in cabins) at the Tawas Point State Park. A memorial ceremony will commence in the afternoon, followed by a dinner at Mr Jack’s in town, and finally a campfire back at camp (to warm our buns!). With the weather this time of year there is no shame in driving to this “ride”. Pat Carol has offered once again to hook us up with firewood and to make the dinner reservation at Mr Jacks. Please RSVP to Pat or on the forum here.
The Annual Fall Picnic on October 11th was a success with Head Chef Dick Hautau in charge. The picnic was held at Fort Gratiot County Park next to Lake Huron. It was a beautiful day for it. Photo's courtesy of Marina Ackerson.
The third installment of Dave Allgood's dual sport rides happend later in the month. A group of six TCD'ers heading down to Coshocton, Ohio extended the fall colors and enjoyed some winding dirty roads.

Club member Doug Radtke summed it as follows:  "It was a great weekend. The weather was pretty good and we enjoyed many miles of remote dirt roads. Here are a few more pics. We also met John and Don, two locals riding a GS and an LT. They offered to show us around next time a group heads down. We also hooked them up with the TDC website so they could meet up with us on a future ride.
The November Monthly Saturday Ride (last one this year) is on the 15th. The start time has been moved back to 8:30am as this is late in the year. We'll head out from shop to downtown Detroit for a cup of java and light brunch. Meet up at BMW SEM at 8:30 AM and head out sometime after 9am.

Changing of the Guard:  I recently inherited the office of the President from Geoff Blow. There was a quick announcement made at the time, but now I feel a formal introduction is in order. Before I begin, I would like to formally thank Geoff Blow for his service to the club over the last year. Geoff had similarly inherited the office from Tom Gary and has done a great job of keeping things running smoothly. Last month Geoff had to make the hard decision to step down as club President so he could focus on rebuilding his business. I'm sure I speak for the entire club in wishing Geoff the best in his endeavors.

As Vice President the preverbal pontoon was then passed onto me. For those of you that don't know me, I'm the guy that has been filling your email inboxes with these updates over the last several months. After only being a member for a couple of years I stepped up as VP at the planning meeting last year. For me the decision was easy one to make with all of the good people I had met in the club combined with the desire to see the club continue to prosper. I'm glad I could both help and serve the club.

I have to say the prospect of being both a newer member and an officer is not only challenging but daunting at times. Although, I've been aware of the fact that I only really know a portion of the club, it has been ever so more apparent to me as I step into this new position. In the upcoming year I certainly hope to get to know more of the members, after all, you are what make this a great club.

I joined the TCD back in October 2010 when I bought my first BMW from Owen Balduf, BMW Motorcycle SE Michigan. The membership program through the local dealerships paid off for me. Both Owen and John Horner were quick to welcome me into this community. I was apprehensive about the “Touring Club” at first, but then Owen got me out on one of Dave Allgood’s Sunday after breakfast dirt roads ride. I have never turned back.

Special thanks to Marina Ackerson, Dave Allgood, Kay Shaw, Kevin Gao and Doug Radtke for the photographs this month.
Enjoy the rides, enjoy the club!
