Dear friends from near and far,

"So often activism is based on what we are against, what we don't like, what we don't want. And yet we manifest what we focus on. And we manifest yet ever more of what we don't want, what we don't like, what we want to change. For me, activism is about a spiritual practice as a way of life. I didn't climb the tree because I was angry at the corporations and the government; I climbed the tree because when I fell in love with the redwoods, I fell in love with the world. So, it is my feeling of 'connection' that drives me, instead of my anger and feelings of being disconnected."

--Julia Butterfly Hill, who lived in a tree she named Luna, for 2 years to protect
it from logging.

Although our intentions take time to be realized, when we set them in motion and water them with our love and courage, they will bear fruit. The little clay pots we work with every month and carry around the world filled with our loving prayers for peace and healing, open possibilities for us as holy vessels to accomplish seemingly miraculous feats which can contribute to an awakened world.

Moonrise at Ghost Ranch, by Wouter Verhoeven

This full moon we will focus our prayers and intentions on the third generation of Earth Treasure Vases about to be made by participants in the Crafting Earthen Vessels Retreat at Ghost Ranch New Mexico, August 28th—September 3rd.

During this retreat, participants, who have been selected based on their applications, will be crafting the next generation of Earth Treasure Vases to expand our global healing mandala.  The retreat is a rare opportunity to learn from Santa Clara Pueblo potter, Marian Naranjo, who will guide us in crafting the pots in her Native tradition, bringing this practice alive in new ways. Cynthia Jurs will teach the Earth Treasure Vase practice to participants who will carry the vessels to the lands they love.

This full moon, retreat participants will share their intentions for the vase they will make. You are invited to generate support for these new ETV Stewards and offer your own prayers for the locations they will go to.
Please join us on Zoom this full moon, Sunday August 22, 2021

A THIRD GENERATION OF Earth Treasure Vases is Coming Alive!

With the IPCC Report just released, comes dire news about the state of our planet unfolding before our very eyes through the raging wildfires, diminishing fresh water and spreading pandemic—to name just a few. We are being asked to wake up and change our destructive ways. The Gaia Mandala community is dedicated to global healing. We meet every month to hold Earth’s suffering in our awareness and feed the spirit of renewal in our world. Our shared intentions form the first step in restoring balance and harmony, engaging us in the work of our times. Taking action from our hearts to protect and restore what we love flows naturally from here.

The great 8th Century saint, Padmasambava, who brought Buddhism to Tibet, predicted times of great deterioration and suffering for our planet from human excessiveness. He transmitted the importance of remembering our innate nature and basic goodness in these “dregs of time.”  And he gave us the practice of the Earth Treasure Vases as a remedy to restore balance and harmony and bring life-essence to the Earth.

Our particular way of practicing with the Earth Treasure Vases began in 1990 when Cynthia received instruction from Charok Rinpoche in Nepal. She was given 30 Earth Treasure Vases (ETVs) and over the next decade these were taken on pilgrimages around the planet. Charok Rinpoche told Cynthia, “Everything comes from the Earth and you need to do whatever you can to protect and restore the source of all life.” The Earth Treasure Vases are filled with life-enhancing medicines and consecrated with prayers to do just that.

Cynthia stewarded those 30 ETVs all around the world and as she was preparing the last of the original ETVs for Australia, another 40 Earth Treasure Vases came to her.  These little vases, half the size of the “First Generation” vases, had been made at the same time but had been kept in storage. Cynthia took four of these with her to Australia and passed them to the ETV “mob” there for distribution on that continent. The first three of these “Second Generation” vases was planted at the 50,000-year-old rock shelter, Garbarnmang, in Northern Territory, Arnhem Land, Australia. From there, the 2nd Generation of vases took on a life of their own through the hands of stewards from around the world. Of these, there are still 14 to be dedicated.

In Australia, Aboriginal elders demonstrated the importance of being “Welcomed to Country.” This connection to “country” opened the Ancestral spirit of the land to us and allowed the Earth Treasure Vases to find their homes.

Living in New Mexico where there is a strong Native tradition of pottery making in the Tewa world, we have often thought it would be wonderful to make our own Earth Treasure Vases. In 2011, several of us were introduced to Santa Clara potter, educator and activist, Marian Naranjo. Over the next decade we have built a relationship with Marian and slowly, she warmed to the idea of guiding us in crafting a Third Generation of Earth Treasure Vases here on the Ancestral lands of her people.

Made from the red mica clay of Northern New Mexico and blessed by Marian Naranjo and other local spiritual leaders, the Third Generation of ETVs will open our connection to country here in North America. These vases will also receive some of the sacred medicines gathered by Lama Ngawang Tsultrim Zangpo from all the Buddhist lineages of Tibet and Nepal at the time of his making the original ETVs. Thus, they will carry a potent blend of sacred intention from all these cultures and traditions.

According to ancient tradition, the clay vessels we have worked with and will now make ourselves, have the power to remove negativity, purify the environment, bring harmony and heal over great distances, affecting the hearts and minds of those who come within their sphere of influence. Through this practice, we realize that healing of the environment takes place on many levels at once and that we too are holy vessels.

As we steward and craft the earthen vessels, we are being called by lineage masters and ancestors of the land, to awaken to our innate wisdom and compassion and to feed this not only into the vases, but into the Earth herself, through being mindfully aware of our connection with her as we make the vessels and steward them where they need to go.

The Lamas told Cynthia over and over, “Even just one person with a dedicated spiritual practice can benefit the whole area around where they live.”

We all struggle with helplessness about the enormity of what we are currently facing. This practice gives us a way to channel our best intentions for the healing that is so needed. Like the treasure vases, each of us resides within the mandala of Mother Earth. We are each a node, a mote of light radiating love and caring. When we listen deeply, we hear Gaia calling, the Lineage Masters and Ancestors speaking. Our awakened nature is rooted in Country. Together we are Strong. May we awaken to our sacred purpose and contribute to the regeneration of life on Earth.

Full Moon Earth Treasure Vase Global Healing Meditation

Inspired by an ancient Tibetan Buddhist tradition, our monthly Global Healing Meditation lives at the center of this community where once a month on the full moon we invoke the locations of all the Earth Treasure Vases that have been buried around the planet to bring healing and protection to the Earth and imagine our prayers radiating out to activate the global healing mandala that has been created, embracing all of Gaia in our love. Each month we focus our intentions on a particular treasure vase that is in the process of being accomplished.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS with these 2021 FULL MOON DATES:
September 20, October 20, November 19 and December 18.
Our Monday Mindfulness Meditations provide the opportunity to enter into a quiet place within, catch our breath, center ourselves, let go of anxiety and reconnect with our true source of being within the context of a supportive group or “sangha”. Cultivating mindful awareness, we can meet these times of collective crisis and opportunity with calm and clarity. During each session, our practice centers simply and effortlessly on the breath as a way to anchor our minds as we return over and over to the present moment. There is a wealth of wisdom in this circle. Teachings and reflections are offered by Cynthia and various Sangha members. We then enjoy two 20-minute periods of silent sitting meditation interspersed with 10 minutes of slow walking meditation. We close with a poem by Cynthia West, then open the circle for sharing. The group meets on the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 5:00 pm MT. Suggested donation $10/ session.
