We are very excited to announce that Botswana Children of Promise is open and ready for sponsorship!  Twenty applications have been submitted in the last week.  These children are in desperate need of help.

We have been working with the Church of God leadership in Botswana for a couple of years, planning and putting into place the leadership team for this program.  Global Strategy Missionary Abby Stocksdale is the director, joined by Assistant Director Tebby Kalayakgosi.  This is a dynamic team!  (Pictured below:  Dr. Paul Maxfield, Executive Director; Abby Stocksdale; and Tebby Kalayakgosi - February 2019 - working on preparations for opening the sponsorship program.)

Botswana is located just north of South Africa.  It's population is  2,370,447.  It is also home to 130,000 elephants, the highest among the African nations.
Children between the ages of four and 12 are waiting for sponsors.  These children come from two congregations:  Kabung and Boseja, both in the city of Maun.  You can sponsor one of these children by calling our office at 765-648-2190 or emailing us at

Director's Perspective

Dr. Paul Maxfield
Executive Director

We are passionate about the impact of sponsorship on children's lives!  We have seen thousands of children grow, flourish, and blossom into educated young adults of character and ability.  But there are parallel blessings to sponsorship that sometimes go unmentioned.

Recently, I traveled to Colombia and Ecuador with four sponsors:  Patty Deacon, Troutdale, OR; Dawn Brady Wimmer, Anderson, IN; Barbara Bennett, Willow Springs, MO; and Becki Burton, Oklahoma City, OK.  They were a tremendous interviewing team! Three of them met their sponsored children!  What great moments of connection, love, and grace those were. Sponsorship not only blesses children, it blesses sponsors, too.

Our program directors around the world do not have university degrees in sponsorship programs!  (Those degrees do not exist.)  They are people who volunteer for this work because they love children and feel God has called them to lead their country's program.  Yet, the sponsorship program stretches them, too, and brings growth in their lives.

While in Colombia, I met with Director Jeanet Ortiz Pinto, of Puerto Asis, Colombia.  She voluntarily directs the program in one of our most dangerous areas of the world.  Yet, Jeanet and her husband, Pastor Angel, serve the churches in that region with courage and confidence that God is leading.

Jeanet shared with me that COP has developed her own skills and abilities, and caused her to grow as a person.  She mentioned to me, "When you and Brenda came to Puerto Asis and met with me and showed me all the details of running the program, you made me feel like an executive woman.  And I have grown into a much better leader and director because of this program."

Sponsorship is a benefit to the child, the leaders, and the sponsors.  It's a win-win-win.  I'm so grateful for the privilege of growing right along with everyone else during my 16 years at Children of Promise.
Jeanet Pinto Ortiz has served as Children of Promise director in Puerto Asis, Colombia, and the surrounding churches for more than 20 years.  She and her husband, Angel, live in continual danger, along with the sponsored children and their families.  (Many children's parents have been assassinated.) She has a deep love for the children and works under very stressful conditions in order to share the love of God with them, and to provide the sponsorship benefits.  Please remember Jeanet and Angel, as well as all COP directors, in your prayers.
In the above photos, Becki Burton meets Hannah, and they have lots of fun with bubbles.  Dawn meets Danna and Barbara meets Karelys, both in Ecuador.  The group poses with Ecuador COP Director Angelita Downing and translator "JD" on a sightseeing adventure in Quito.  And Dawn Brady tries an Ecuadorian delicacy:  baked guinea pig!  See what fun you can have on a sponsor trip!
  • COP Works:  This is a booklet that explains all the details of how Children of Promise works.  COP Works is especially informative for churches, mission teams, etc., as they consider ministries to support. It deals with procedures, accountability, financial questions, and the differences your group can make in the lives of children.  Contact Kirk Bookout, Development Director, at or 765-648-2114. He will be glad to send you an electronic copy free of charge.
  • Please Pray:  For Mike and Heather Webb, new Directors-Elect,as they transition from their leadership role in Africa with Global Strategy to their new posts at Children of Promise.
  • COP at North American Convention (Orlando): Stop by our COP display and see us. You are invited to a reception after the evening service on Friday to honor Paul Maxfield for his 16 years of outstanding leadership to COP.  Paul will retire September 30, 2019. Jeff Jenness of Servant Solutions (Board of Pensions) will be honored as well for his retirement in December, 2019.

Giving Promise
Kirk Bookout
Development Director

Kirk is traveling with a group of sponsors in The Philippines and Thailand at this time.  But he has sent this video of the children in The Philippines singing, "What a Mighty God We Serve."

Kirk would say, "What better way to honor such a mighty God than to support, love, and encourage one of His children in great need.  Let's honor Him by nurturing and caring for His children."

Your love for children lives on through remembering Children of Promise in your will.
