Update 4, June 2018

Queens Birthday was a big weekend for the club, celebrating the anniversary of the establishment of the Nelson Club. Club Day, the B's festival game against Collingwood, and interviews with club members was filmed by the Grass Roots rugby show, and the day was capped off with our 150th dinner.

The Junior and Senior teams have a lot happening in the coming weeks — the seniors are currently leading the NPD competition but face an uphill battle as injuries are taking a toll on the players. The junior teams are look forward to the U52kgs tournament and a visit by the Christchurch Football Club during the school holidays.

In this issue we also highlight how well "our boys" are doing in the Super competition and congratulate the players selected for the Seddon Shield U52kg team.

Please feel free to forward this email to anyone you think might be interested — we are keen to get as many "blue-blooded" NRFC members, past players and supporters involved in the club's activities, supporting our teams, and popping into the club rooms after a game for a catch up.

John Goodman Contribution Cup & John Goodman Challenge Trophy

John always said he bleed blue and NRFC was his religion.

As well as a staunch Nelson man John worked to foster and grow rugby in the Nelson region and the awards acknowledge his service to rugby.

The Goodman Cup will be awarded for service to the NRFC, and the John Goodman Challenge Trophy, presented to the Goodman family by the Tasman Union, will be played for each week in the senior competition.

The awards were presented to the Goodman Family at the 150th dinner.

Senior News

Nelson are currently on top of the NPD Tasman Trophy (Division 1) scoreboard and their success has been built on a lot of hard work and real dedication from the team. Due to injuries and unavailability the team has struggled to field a team each week. Coach Kade Heke is very proud of the heart his players are showing "They are turning up, playing through the pain and working incredibly hard to ensure Nelson has a chance of making the finals. I couldn't ask for anything more from the players - they are giving their all" says Kade.

Crusaders vs Chiefs in Hamilton, 2/6/2018

Congratulations to the Nelson Boys (Ethan,Tima, David, Quin) for making the team play to the Chiefs in Hamilton. The incredible Mr Crockett makes the cut through his association with junior rugby at NZ's oldest and best rugby club.

Nelson v Collingwood Festival Match

Every year Nelson and Collingwood play for the Brydon/Strange Cup - a fixture that celebrates the strong connection between the two clubs and recognises the importance of the Brydon and Strange families to both clubs.

Earlier this year the Cup was up for grabs and after a tight contest Collingwood were the victors.

As part of our 150th celebrations Nelson and Collingwood played a festival game of rugby at Neale Park.

Collingwood were victorious on the day (29 - 17) and although the B's coach Grant Cossett felt that Nelson didn't value the ball enough, it was a great game of rugby with both sides competing to win.

Even for a festival game you don't devalue your jersey by not playing to win.
