Noel Barton Cup
Nelson and Waimea play for the Noel Barton Trophy this Saturday (12th May) at Jubilee Park. Kick off 3pm.
This year will be especially poignant as last year Waimea lost life member Carl Thelin.
Carl was Noel's nephew and after Noel's death, proposed the cup to honour Noel, contested between Nelson and Waimea each year.
Carl played, coached and was a life member of Waimea Club but prior to his move to out country Carl played Nelson and still supported the Nelson team as long as they weren't playing Waimea!
Nelson coach Kade Heke says the Noel Barton is a special trophy for the club.
“Noel is a big driver for us as he epitomises what it is to be a Nelson club man.”
The current management also has plenty of connections to the name on the trophy. He is Kade’s great uncle and godfather to manager Stuart Damon.
