Welcome to the September edition of Athletics Wellington News for 2016. It includes a mix of info for members and profiles on people in our sport. The calendar is out for the upcoming athletics season and we there's links to offers from the Shoe Clinic and Les Mills. NZ Road Champs impress as does Katie Kemp
The first weekend in September saw some excellent performances and great contests at the New Zealand Road Championships in Masterton. Using an innovative 1km loop course which was excellent for the good number of spectators at the event, organisers, Peter and Sylvia Maunder, Tony Price and Mark and Andrea Harris, presented a very good championship event. Katie Kemp won an unexpected medal at the New Zealand Road Championships.
The 40-year-old current New Zealand Marathon Champion from Wellington went into the race in Masterton on Saturday expecting to run a decent time, but never thought she would be in the hunt for a medal. Read more
Congratulations Peter Maunder - New President of Athletics NZ
Peter Maunder (pictured centre with Alan Stevens left and David Lonsdale right), after a year as vice president of Athletics New Zealand, is the organisation’s new president.
Peter, who joined Wellington Scottish in 1970 and is a life member and former chairman of Athletics Wellington, had no inkling that he would preside over the sporting organisation he has had a long involvement in.
“It’s something that I thought I’d never aspire to,” he said. Read more
Hundreds expected at Cigna Kids Waterfront Fun Run
The Cigna Kids Waterfront Fun Run will be held next month with hundreds of children expected to take part. Now in its fourth year the annual Athletics Wellington event is run in partnership with Cigna New Zealand and Sport Wellington.
This year the event will be held at the new venue of Waitangi Park on Thursday 20 October. Start and finish lines will be centred in the park with 500m fun runs for pre-schoolers, through to students in Year 8 running from 1 – 2 km depending on their age.
“We are really passionate about the health and wellbeing of our communities and this event is a great way to encourage kids to get out and be active,” says Lance Walker, Cigna CEO.
“As with the annual Cigna Round the Bays, the event is a family affair and we encourage parents to not only bring their children down for the afternoon but to also get involved, especially with the pre-schoolers who want to take part.” Read more
Three Wellingtonians at the Rio Olympics
For the first time in Olympic history, two Wellingtonians contested a 1500m event at an Olympic Games. Hamish Carson, in his first games, with the world’s oldest coach was hoping to be a finalist, while Nick Willis, in his third games, hoped to be the events oldest medalist and qualify for his third successive final. 2016/17 Track and Field Calendar Out Now
The Track and Field Calendar for the 2016/17 season is out. This includes the dates and venues for ALL events, both seniors and juniors.
Charlie Nairne, Chair of the Senior Track and Field Committee says "We have some exciting new initiatives this season for the Saturday afternoon meets for college age and older, with the main one being the introduction of a series of Grand Prix Meets. The basics of these are:
6 meets (1 per month) over the course of the summer season.
Full program with quality fields.
Catering for age groups U16 – Masters grades including AWD athletes , male and female.
Minimum requirement of 4 events to enter to be eligible for prizes.
CASH prizes at the end of the season for the most consistent performers in all age groups and genders.
Pre entry required.
$5 Entry fee per athlete to create prize pool.

Outside of these Grand Prix Events we will have a number of other more low key events that will be an opportunity for coaches and schools to practise in a competitive environment. Read more
AWAD Squad Profile: Tessa Hunt
Tessa Hunt is one of several athletes who are ejoying being part of the Athletics Wellington Athlete Development (AWAD) programme for the second successive year.
AWAD provides benchmarking of key performance factors such as movement competency, performance planning, testing and measurement assessment, nutrition, injury prevention and life skills. It is run in conjunction with the Wellington City Council and Sport Wellington’s Performance Hub.
Since selection into the programme last year Tessa has achieved her goals – a two second personal best in the 800m and a six second decrease in her 1500m time. But she wants to run faster. Read More
Wellington Open 5km Fun Run
Athletics Wellington in partnership with TempoFit brings you the Wellington Open 5km Fun Run on Thursday 20 October. The 5km Fun Run immediately follows the Cigna Kids Waterfront Fun Run. Come along and meet Hamish Carson, NZ Olympian who competed at the Rio Olympics in the 1500m and Melissa Moon, former World Mountain Running Champion.
Something to work towards now spring is in the air. The 5km event is open to all so talk a few of your family and friends into it and register now. There's something for everyone with the Cigna Kids Waterfront Fun Run on prior to this event. Read more
