It's athletics season!  Check out details on our range of events coming up in Wellington, both on and off the track. Before reading on, have you thought about becoming an official or learning more about our sport? There's an Officials Course this Sunday 16 October on Jumps at Newtown Park from 2pm to 6pm. Contact if you'd like to attend. There's also a Get Set Go Coaching Course this Sunday at Grenada North Park in Tawa from 3pm to 4.30pm. It's free to attend and you can bring your kids with you (the programme is for kids aged 6 and under). Register for this here. Let’s keep safe out there this summer. Our Athletics Wellington Health and Safety Committee, led by Board Member Hamish Girvan, has put together a health and safety guideline for club volunteers, officials, coaches and athletes of some things that can make the season both safer and injury free. Check out this new page on our website for all the details.
Cigna Kids Waterfront Fun Run
The Cigna Kids Waterfront Fun Run is on next week on Thursday 20 October at Waitangi Park. If you haven’t registered yet – make sure you do by Thursday 13 October at 5pm  to receive a personalised race bib on the day! A great memento for future. Let your friends and family know too.

Cigna Kids Waterfront Fun Run Distances and Event Times
There are a number of race options for the Cigna Kids Waterfront Fun Run. The entry fee is $10:
4.30pm: 500m for year 0s (4 years and under on 1 April 2016)
4.40pm: 1km for year 1 school students 
4.50pm: 1km for year 2 school students
5.00pm: 1.5km for year 3 school students
5.10pm: 1.5km for year 4 school students
5.25pm: 2km for year 5 school students 
5.40pm: 2km for year 6, 7 and 8 school students
All events: 500m, 1km, 1.5km, 2km events will start and finish at Waitangi Park.  Race bib pick up will be at Waitangi Park from 3.45pm on event day.
Track and Field Interclubs for college age, seniors and masters
Official Opening Day at Newtown Park this Saturday 15 October. For info on the athletics season for college age, seniors and masters go to THIS LINK. This includes the timetable for this Saturday. Details also included on our Athletics Wellington Sports App.
NEW this season - Athletics Grand Prix Meets for 2016/17
Grand Prix Meets 2106/2017 Season
Athletics Wellington is presenting a new concept for the 2016/17 season. Grand Prix meets will be held five times during the season. We will attract the very best fields from Wellington and surrounding provinces. There will be a large range of events each month catering for more athletes. We will run a points series using the WMA Age grading calculator tables and for athletes with disabilities based upon a percentage of the World Record. Events - Grand Prix
Regional League Meets 2016
Saturday 29 October:  Hawke's Bay Regional Sports Park, Hastings
Saturday 5 November:  Cooks Gardens, Whanganui
Saturday 19 November:  Newtown Park, Wellington
ENTRIES:  To enter any of these regional events you need to contact your club administrator who will send a list of their club athletes to the event organisers. 
The first Regional Meet is taking place at the Hawke's Bay Regional Sports Park, Hastings on Saturday 29 October for college age athletes, seniors and masters.  Entries for this are through your club so you need to let them know if you are entering by Wednesday 26 October.  If you're not sure it's better to include your details.  The same process will be used for the regional meets in Whanganui on Saturday 5 November and Wellington on Saturday 19 November.  Please contact your club administrator if you are likely to do these events too.

Junior Interclubs for 7 to 15 year olds
If you're aged 7 to 15 years of age and a member of an athletics club you get to compete at Newtown Park, and other venues around the Wellington region throughout the summer. The junior interclubs are primarily held on Sunday mornings starting at 10am.

Interclubs are heaps of fun. You get to practice what you've learnt at club nights, meet new friends from other clubs and see yourself improving week after week and even year after year.  For the junior interclubs there is no need to pre register for each of these events.  If you're a financial club member for the 2016/17 season you can just turn up and compete for your club.

Spring has Sprung - Let's Go Run - TempoFit Wellington
TempoFit Wellington starts 24 October!
After braving the winter months, Wellington is finally going to experience a TempoFit season in daylight savings and warmer weather (hopefully!). 
The Late Spring Season runs from 24 October to 4 December and is ideal for getting fitter and faster before all the Christmas parties start. Waterfront 5km Series - Tuesdays on the Wellington Waterfront
During daylight savings, Wellington Scottish run the Waterfront 5k series on the amazing Wellington Waterfront.
  • Every Tuesday night over summer* (Oct 4 - Mar 28th - excluding Dec 27th & Jan 3rd)
  • From Mac's Brewery Bar on Taranaki Wharf
  • Registration from 5pm. Run starts 5:40pm
  • Prizegiving ~ 6:20pm (after last finisher)
  • Cost $7 cash per race - pay on the night - or you can enter online / buy multi-trip tickets to save money and time
  • Everyone is welcome - runners, joggers, walkers - parents with Bubbas in buggies/ strollers 
  • There will be pacers (from Wellington Scottish Athletics Club) for 20, 25 and 30min goal times most nights this summer.

Honest 10 - once a month on Sundays from The Wind Needle, Greta Point
The Honest 10 is a professionally and accurately measured 10km fun run event held once a month on Sunday mornings on a flat out-and-back course around the Wellington waterfront. It starts at the Wind Needle on the corner of Cobham Drive and Evans Bay Parade, where there's plenty of free parking, and heads towards the central city, turning around at Freyberg Pool.  There's also a 5km option that turns around earlier, with both options finishing back at the Wind Needle. Come along for an easy fun run or use it to test yourself over an accurately measured course - all welcome! Optional 8:40 start time if you think you would be over 65 minutes.  For more info go to WHAC's Honest 10 link on their website. Details still to come for their summer dates

The final event in the winter series is also where 
Lung Cancer Patient Ambassador, John Ashton has set his sights on completing a 10k run to raise awareness of lung cancer and highlight not only the results of access to effective medicines, but also the benefits of exercise for people with lung disease. Whilst John has just ¾ of his pre-cancer lungs left, he has been busy training with the goal of breaking 60 minutes in this 10k run. John says:
 “As a lung cancer patient I became aware of the low profile lung cancer has in New Zealand, despite it causing more deaths than any other type of cancer (5 Kiwis die every day from lung cancer).”
 “As lung cancer patient ambassador for Lung Foundation New Zealand, I am dedicated to increasing the awareness and early detection of lung cancer and advocating for more funded treatment options for patients.”
