Welcome to the June edition of Athletics Wellington News for 2016.  With the cross country season in full swing this newsletter includes profiles on athletes, dates and info for coaching and officials courses and our upcoming Wellington Centre Cross Country Champs.  There's also a summary on how our Wellington athletes went at the NZ Secondary School Cross Country Champs. And we congratulate David Lonsdale and Willy Szeto who are awarded Life Membership at our recent AGM.  Minutes from the AGM are included alongside their impressive citations.  Happy reading.  Finally, all the best to those heading off to Taupo for the North Island Cross Country Champs this weekend.

Congratulations to Willy Szeto, Chair of our Athletics Wellington Junior Committee and David Lonsdale, President of Athletics Wellington who were made Life Members of Athletics Wellington at the AGM held on Monday 20 June.  The impressive citations for Willy and David show just how much they have contributed to our sport for many years. Coaching Courses - IAAF Level 1 or Individual Module options
IAAF has approved IAAF LEVEL 1 courses for 2016.  Complete all five weekends for the full course, or if you'd prefer individuals modules you must attend the first weekend on 9 & 10 July and then the RUN or JUMP or THROW module weekend. It's a fantastic opportunity for our coaches and volunteers to receive an IAAF coaching qualification without having to travel outside the region.  This course is being held in Wellington.  We need a minimum of 15 coaches for these courses to go ahead so please help spread the word.  Open to coaches outside the Wellington region as well.  If you're interested let us know NOW as we're making a decision next week whether to proceed or not.  For more info click here
Wellington Cross Country Champs - entry info, maps, timetable
For all the info you need to know on the Wellington Cross Country Champs to be held at Grenada North Park on SUNDAY 24 JULY click here.  The link includes online entry details, timetable and maps.  Enter at least one week prior and you'll receive a personalised race bib on the day.  Note any child aged from year 0 to year 8 MUST enter through the Athletics Hub website as the Wellington Cross Country Champs is combining with the Kids Cross Country event at Tawa.  Year 0s to Year 8s must use the race bib they collect on the day from the registration area (not their interclub race bib they may have already used for the Dorne or Vosseler).  And yes, that means they're competing for a Kids Cross Country Series medal AND an Athletics Wellington Cross Country medal.  Only 2016/17 financial harrier members are eligible for centre medals (and you must wear your club singlet).
Sarah Drought's impressive comeback this winter

Sarah Drought is making a good comeback after injury.   The Wellington Harrier and Athletic Club athlete has won both her races this year; the Dorne Cup and the Wellington 10k event on 26 June.
It was the first time competing in either event in four years, having raced only a handful of times since 2012. She is coached by Steve Willis.
“I’m slowly getting back into it,” she said. “My training is building gradually, it’s all about doing things smarter. I’m not yet back to where I was in 2012 – I’ve still got a long way to go.”  Read More
Half Marathon Titles to Brian Garmonsway and Rebecca Elliott
Rebecca Elliott and Brian Garmonsway are the Wellington half marathon champions after heading off the competition in the weekend. Both reside in the Hutt Valley.  Elliott, a member of Wellington Harrier Athletic Club is primarily a triathlete. She came fourth in the recent Dorne Cup.
“I’ve run for WHAC since I was 14 with a bit of break when I headed away for university – I’ve always been involved in harriers.” Now, however, triathlon is her focus. She is heading off to the Half-Ironman World Triathlon Champs in the Sunshine Coast in September as the first ranked Wellington female triathlete. She is the national triathlon champion and also was first age-group athlete in the most recent Taupo half Ironman.

Letha Whitham from WHAC wins Marathon Trip to Japan
Letha Whitham got a bit of a surprise after her first Wellington Marathon when she found out she had won a trip to Japan – with all her expenses paid.
She has only been in New Zealand for six months, and joined the Wellington Harrier and Athletic Club in January, her first ever club.
In February, she will be winging her way to Sakai City in Japan to compete in the Senshu Marathon, after being the first placed Wellingtonian in the marathon last Sunday, clocking 3 hours 19 mins 26 secs – a five minute personal best.  Read More
Dougal Thorburn Winning Mountain and Marathon Titles
Dougal Thorburn is a versatile runner, revelling in events as diverse as mountain running, marathons and even pram pushing.  With just three weeks separating his recent National Mountain Running title, and his victory in the Christchurch marathon, Dougal chose to forgo racing during the weekend of the Wellington marathon. He had entered in the half but withdrew, leaving the race open for the talented teenager, Michael Voss to win in 1:10:13.
But Thorburn is in his mid-30’s now – nearly twice as old as Voss - takes a little longer to recover from events such as the Christchurch Marathon three weeks prior. “It takes a month to recover,” he said of marathon events.  Read More
Success at NZ Secondary School Cross Country Champs - Results Summary
Congratulations to Tessa Hunt (WHAC and Wellington East), Imogen Skelton (WHAC and Samuel Marsden) and Stefan Przychodzko (Kapiti and Paraparaumu) who have been selected to represent NZSSAA at the Athletics Australia and Australian Schools Cross Country Championships in Canberra. The NZ Secondary School Cross Country Champs were held in Rotorua on Saturday 18 June.  All results can be found at http://nzssaa.org.nz
Well done to all those who took part.  It’s the biggest cross country event in New Zealand with huge fields.  Besides those who made the team to compete in Australia, special mention should also be made of Finn Seeds, second in the Year 9 Boys race, Liam Chesney 3rd in the Junior Boys and Kirstie Rae, 3rd in the Junior Girls race.  All our relay teams did fantastically well and the Wellington Girls 3-person and 6-person teams won both these team titles.
