Singalong Soirée

Sunday Jan 25th, 7:30 pm
Tranzac Club

292 Brunswick Ave (S. of Bloor)

Once a month my trio Gathering Sparks performs a concert of songs to sing along with. We mix traditional folk and gospel songs with Motown, Beatles, country music, 1980's pop, as well as some of our original tunes -- whatever we think has good parts for joining in. It's a really fine way to spend your evening and we all know how good singing is for your mental health. So come on out and sing with us!

Winter Folk Camp

This is a wonderful three-day music retreat in a beautiful setting. A great way to re-charge your batteries, meet and learn from other musicians, and relax in the woods. Featuring:
Gathering Sparks had a fabulous weekend at the Canadian Folk Music Awards in Ottawa this past November. It was a huge honour to be nominated for "Vocal Group of the Year" even though we didn't receive the award, and we came away with renewed admiration for the folk scene across this country. We also kept busy! We performed in a nominee showcase, taught a Beatles Harmony workshop, and did an early morning interview for CBC Radio while we were there.

A Few of My Favourite Things

Lead Belly
January 20 would have been Huddie Ledbetter's 127 birthday (if I'm counting correctly). He is one of the giants of blues and folk music, and it's amazing we have so much of his music to listen to today. Here's his Wikipedia article, and a few YouTube links to his songs:
National Kazoo Day
Did you know that January 28th is National Kazoo Day? And did you know that the Kazoo Factory and Museum in Eden, New York (about 2 hrs from Toronto) is the only metal kazoo factory in North America? They still make their kazoos the same way they did in 1916, with old-style factory machines. If you are in the area, it's worth a stop to tour the factory and visit their very fun gift shop. I discovered there is another kazoo museum in Beaufort, North Carolina. Who knew?! Road trip, anyone?

Red Door Shelter
There are so many deserving organizations in Toronto that are working hard to make our city a better place to live. The Red Door Shelter is one of those organizations. They have been providing emergency shelter to families, refugees, and women fleeing violence since 1982. Why not help them out with a donation?
