January was three seconds long, we skipped February altogether and now it’s almost Easter! Does anyone else feel like 2018 is going to be another one of those blink and you miss it years?
April 2018 seemed such a long time ago when the Commonwealth Games bid intention was announced in 2010 but here we are, twenty days out from the Commonwealth Games. Like everyone else, I’m excited for the opportunity to share our beautiful home on the world stage and see our local businesses and services reap the rewards of tourism and increased patronage. I also look forward to sharing the hosting experience with youngest community members and seeing the magic through their eyes.
Now onto what’s been happening and a snapshot of what is happening in the Burleigh electorate …
School leader investitures

Between Parliament sittings, I was lucky to attend a few of our local student leader investitures. What a great bunch of young men and women our schools have to lead them this year.

A big congratulations to all local students and best wishes for successful year of learning in 2018.

Baby Give Back

I was in Parliament last week on International Women’s Day and while  I am privileged to know many amazing women doing incredible things in our community, I gave a speech on Baby Give Back and the team of women behind the organisation.

Stop the Light Rail

As the State Member for the Burleigh electorate, I am sponsoring a Queensland Parliament petition to draw the attention of the Parliament to the proposed light rail route would follow the Gold Coast Highway through Burleigh and subsequently onto Palm Beach. There has been very limited local community consultation by Gold Coast City Council with Southern Gold Coast residents who will be directly affected by this proposed route.

Parking on both sides of the highway would be removed and there would be a negative impact upon all those who live along or near the Gold Coast Highway as well as many of the now thriving local small businesses. There would also be harmful impact to the Burleigh koala population and to the Burleigh Headland, a significant site for Aboriginal people.

The petition aims to request the Parliament to direct the feasibility study to investigate alternative routes for the Light Rail to head South and not the Gold Coast Highway route alone.

You can help by signing this e-petition with Queensland Parliament and adding your voice to the cause.
