It’s a new year with fresh hope and new possibilities.

I hope yours has gotten off to a great start and that 2017 will be the finest yet for you and all Queenslanders.

Now onto what’s been happening and a snapshot of what I have been doing (minus all the meetings, hearings and the rest)…

Gold Coast Seniors Tennis Club official opening

It was a privilege to participate in the
official opening of new facilities at
Pizzey Park Tennis Centre in January.
I worked hard with the Gold Coast Seniors Tennis and Miami Tennis Clubs to secure almost $600,000 in funding under an LNP Government for the upgrades and its great to see
the visions become reality.

The expanded facilities will cater for all ages
and players of all standards.

School leader investitures

A huge congratulations and welcome to all of
the Student Leaders being invested at
our local schools. I’ve been lucky enough
to attend a few of the ceremonies and
meet the leaders of our future.

I wish all of our students the very best for 2017.

Burleigh Headland – Oceanview track works starting soon

Resurfacing of the Oceanview track is
scheduled to commence mid-March, with completion anticipated by the end of
June (weather dependent).

Work on the track will be completed in three stages and sections of the track will be closed while work is undertaken. Alternative walking tracks will be available via the Rainforest circuit.

Further updates will be provided in early March following finalisation of the construction contract.

Have you heard about Miami Hot Bread’s great offer?

Do you know a family that is struggling or want to stock up on our end of day product. We give all our end of day product to charity or the bin but are really struggling ourselves at the moment and are offering a $30 come and grab as much as you want deal(pies, pastries, bread and buns) at the end of each day. Sometimes it is very depressing making product each day to see it wasted and not sell. Running a small Australian family owned business is very hard these days and we keep fighting as hard as we can.
You must call Lisa on 0401383152 to get this deal by 3pm each day for collection at 4pm.
This is all fresh made daily product.
Southern Gold Coast Light Rail
Late last year I commissioned a talented group of Parliamentary interns from QUT to undertake a study into taking the Light Rail to the Southern Gold Coast.

The results don't necessarily reflect my preferred route and the report doesn't take into account the financial constraints and budget requirements.

In Parliament

Domestic Violence Bill
This week the LNP Opposition
have introduced tough new laws to State Parliament to tackle the growing scourge of domestic violence across the state.
The  Private Members Bill includes reversing
the onus of proof for bail, establishing a
DV alert system, GPS monitoring for high-risk offenders on bail and introducing
immediate appeal rights against bail.
While the Palaszczuk Government has been sitting on their hands saying they will ‘look into’ strong domestic violence laws the LNP has actually gone ahead and done it.
By introducing a DV alert system, victims will be notified when the alleged offender is applying for bail or having their parole reviewed.
We also introduced GPS monitoring as
an option for bail to ensure an alleged
attacker can’t go near the victim.
We’ve seen far too many tragedies of late
and the last thing we want to see is another one.
Queensland accounted for a
quarter of all domestic-violence related
deaths in Australia in 2016.
In 2015-16 there were more than 22,000 domestic violence orders breached across the state – up 39 per cent from the year before.
Despite this alarming surge, the Palaszczuk Government still hasn’t implemented even half of the recommendations from the Not Now, Not Ever report from two years ago.
We hope Members from all sides can look past the politics and support these strong laws because the longer we wait, the longer vulnerable women and children will be put at risk.

Bail (Domestic Violence) and Another Act Amendment Bill 2017
  • Reversing the onus of proof for bail – Making it harder for bail to be granted for alleged offenders charged with domestic violence-related crimes
  • Establishing a DV alert system – The LNP Bill allows for automatic notification when anyone the subject of a domestic violence order is being considered for either bail or parole, giving time for victims to prepare mentally and physically for their potential release
  • GPS monitoring for high-risk offenders on bail – Allowing the police to apply for GPS monitoring as part of a bail condition to ensure the safety of victims  and their families
  • Introducing immediate appeal rights against bail – Providing an urgent review of a granted bail application to a higher court.

with law and order in your community –
and ask any questions you may have!
Guest speaker – Dom Shelley, Queensland Project Manager, Family Drug *Community support for those affected by drug users*
The combined Burleigh, Palm Beach and Elanora (Police) Community Consultative Committee was established to develop a partnership between the Police and the community and meets every three months in an open forum:-
• To update the public on law and order matters in the community
• To give everyone the opportunity to meet the senior Police at the Palm Beach and Elanora Police stations – whose responsibility is also Burleigh.

Everyone likes to feel safe in their community and this is a great opportunity for the public to share information and air any concerns, fears or grievances they may have, so the Police are able to act accordingly. Also, to develop a close relationship with their local police and initiate ongoing cooperative communication.
So, we invite everyone to come along 6 PM Thursday 16th of February at the Currumbin RSL, to do your bit for the community and see what a great job our police are doing!

Cupid Undie Run
I’m proud to support a local event in early 2017 raising funds for neurofibromatosis.
You can register now for Cupid’s Undie Run on the Gold Coast! The date is set with Cupid for 19 February 2017 at Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club, so get your family and friends together and have some fun with us.
The Children’s Tumour Foundation is the key organisation in Australia raising funds for research into neurofibromatosis (NF) and support for adults, children, and families affected by the condition.
NF is a common genetic condition characterised by the growth of benign tumours called neurofibromas. These tumours can grow anywhere in the body where there are nerve cells. The tumours can be clearly visible and can cause a degree of self-consciousness, particularly among younger people.
Therefore the philosophy behind the Undie Run is to encourage participants to feel some of the discomfort that people with NF might experience on a daily basis. However you don’t have to run in your undies, you can dress up in costume, the sillier the better. There will awesome prizes on the day.
Bonds are our official undie sponsor along with Channel 9 as our media partner.
Let’s conquer NF together! Register at www.cupidsundierun.com.au
