BDA eNewsletter | Issue: August 2019

58b9d586-bddc-424d-97b1-85aa55e56d16.jpg

Introduction from our Chair – Martyn Brocklesby

Many economists are revising down their figures for construction growth to the year-end, with some suggesting the industry might actually shrink rather than slow or stall. Brexit is playing a huge part in this slow down, with potential investors’ cash reserves increasing at the expense of investment of all kinds. Even long term, concerns over the government’s ability to deliver HS2, on time and to budget, has seen figures up to 2021 reduced to 1%, and the arrival of the new Prime Minister, committed to initiate a review of it, won’t help optimism, despite his remarks about investing in infrastructure.

Whilst HS2 is not the only project on the table, its success and smooth progression is what provides all construction sectors with a boost, and the economic potential to encourage stakeholders to invest in other projects that support UK Plc. Let’s hope the delays surrounding it are short lived. There are of course other major government infrastructure and development projects underway or in the pipeline, so it’s not all doom and gloom.

From a BDA perspective, work continues. We have our next round of Management Committee and Sub-Committee meetings coming up in the next month, so please let your BDA representative, or BDA secretariat know if there are any matters on which you seek an opinion, would like to raise or think need to be discussed.
