Introduction from our Chair - Paul McMann

May I first take this opportunity to thank out-going British Drilling Association (BDA) Chair Richard Fielden for his hard work and unrelenting commitment to the drilling sector. As I now formally take up the position of BDA Chair from Richard, I know he will be a hard act to follow, and he has certainly stepped down leaving the Association in great shape.
During my tenure as Chair, I will endeavour to keep the ball rolling on the many projects and initiatives already underway, but I would also like to explore some issues of my own. In particular, I would like to support the promotion of the drilling sector as a rewarding career path that is welcoming, diverse and inclusive and above all offers an enormous variety of career opportunities.

On the BDA front, I would like to draw your attention to the new BDA Audit revision, which will require evidence of Wire Rope Inspection training to be submitted as part of the pre-qualification for the BDA Audit. A great safety initiative and long overdue.
The recent BDA seminar in Edinburgh was a great success and I would like to thank all those who presented, as well as exhibitors and delegates. The popularity of the event demonstrates just how much commitment there is in the sector to reducing our carbon footprint and optimism surrounding our journey to net-zero.
I’m also pleased to report that the BDA 5-a-Side Football Tournament is almost fully booked, with the associated sponsorship opportunities now closed. Also, the date for the equally popular BDA Golf Day has been announced – book now as this event fills up quickly!
In closing, I would like to draw your attention to the benefits article below – each month we’ll remind you of some of the benefits you get as a part of your membership. They are extremely valuable, and we are adding more benefits regularly, so please make time to take a look.
A note from the Membership Manager

With much going on within the BDA, all of which comes across my desk, I thought going forward, and where appropriate, I would use this newsletter to talk about any actions for which I have direct responsibility for and highlight some of the areas I am involved in.
For example, I am presently busy organising the BDA Golf Day and the BDA Football Tournament, which will both be great events!
On a wider front I am also looking to engage better with membership and discover what is working for you, also, perhaps more importantly, what isn’t. The BDA is YOUR Association, so I will also be looking to learn what you want from the BDA. It is all too easy for us to make assumptions, or listen to those that shout the loudest, so it is my goal to get a much broader range of views and therefore the BDA can truly represent the sector.
I will also be looking at streamlining processes of the various sub-committees, so they don’t take up as much of each committee member’s time, which is after all voluntary. I see this as somewhat of a priority also.
If you have any questions or comments about the BDA or your members, please feel free to contact me directly, I am available on:
New BDA Audit Requirement

The BDA would like to announce that from September 2022 evidence of Wire Rope Inspection training will be required to be submitted, as part of the pre-qualification for the BDA Audit.
Whilst the audit has included a ‘for information’ question, asking whether the Driller has received training in the inspection of wire ropes, the BDA has found that less than 25% of Auditees have undertaken a suitable course that outlines how to adequately inspect wire ropes in a geotechnical context.
With the inspection of ropes such an important and safety critical aspect the Driller’s daily routine, the BDA felt evidence of training on the topic must therefore be a part of the BDA Audit. The inspection course can be delivered in-house by a competent person or by one of the various training providers.
More information about the inclusion of Wire Rope Inspection Training within the BDA Audit, as well as examples of acceptable courses, can be found in the BDA Audit Update document here:
BDA Seminar - Drilling in Support of Net Zero Scotland

Thank you to all those who attended the recent BDA’s seminar – ‘Drilling in Support of Net Zero Scotland by 2045’ – which was held 27 April 2022, at Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh.
The seminar was well attended, with an outstanding quality of both speakers and presentations. Topics were extremely wide ranging, tackling subjects such as main contractor Arup’s perspective on action being taken across the UK to develop integrated and coherent plans for decarbonising the built environment, through to more the more specific such as ‘Drilling into mines for heat’.
What steps the drilling sector can take to assist the route to net zero by 2045 were also presented as well as how by 2045, it is Scottish government’s plan that homes and buildings are cleaner, greener, and easy to heat, which includes, ensuring that heating Scotland’s buildings no longer contributes to climate change.
The event was not recorded, however an in-depth review is available on the BDA website here:
New BDA Chair in the Press

Paul McMann, the new Chair of the BDA, was recently interviewed by leading geotechnical magazine Ground Engineering, in which he outlines his plans for the BDA during his tenure, as well as looking at some of the wider issues that are facing the drilling sector.
From how these issues will be tackled by the BDA, through to his personal ambitions for the Association, such as ensuring that the drilling industry continues to advance and attract people into the sector and how he aims to continue with the development of industry qualifications and guidance documents, Paul discusses at length how he wants to help take the sector to ever higher levels of professionalism.
The article will be live on Ground Engineering magazine’s website on 11 May 2022, the link to GE Plus website is -
