BDA eNewsletter | Issue: July 2022
Introduction from our Chair - Paul McMann

Welcome to what you could probably call the Summer Newsletter and I hope you’re all managing to squeeze in a few days away from work?

Last month I commented on the rising cost of fuel and raw material prices as being the main drivers behind rising construction costs, and whilst these challenges remain, and expected to continue at least until the end of 2022, the main threat longer term is labour shortages.
In fact, according to a spokesperson at BCIS Materials Cost Index, labour shortages are ‘expected to evolve as the significant driver for overall construction cost increases next year and the construction sector would need to compete for it with other sectors.’ This is particularly worrying for the construction industry, which is already struggling to attract new young talent.

However, I have always liked to help people develop and grow, and during my tenure as Chair of the British Drilling Association (BDA) I would like to extend this to also encourage young people into the drilling industry and support them throughout their careers. The BDA is continuing to deliver its new entrants training scheme and one of the BDA’s working groups will also develop the trailblazer apprenticeship scheme. Drilling has already moved on considerably – offering diverse opportunities to people from all walks of life.

Drilling and construction will always face a challenge attracting new talent, as there are simply so many career choices open to young people, but I think there is room to develop more career paths and development opportunities for drilling operatives and the BDA has already done work in this area, including developing a level three national vocational qualification in advanced drilling.

These and other initiatives are delivering change, albeit slowly, but change at any pace is good and I think the more momentum we generate the faster we will see numbers grow and I think we should all be quite optimistic for the future.

Before I close, I would like to add that entries are now being invited for this year’s BDA Awards and I would encourage you all to enter. The Awards are a great way to celebrate the achievements of your company, individuals and above all the drilling sector that we are all so proud to be a part of. Get those entries in now!
A Note from our General Manager - Joel Stevens

The much-anticipated BDA Golf Tournament is now fully booked, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors - JKS Boyles, Fugro, A.I.P.S Insurance, Marshall Drilling and Wheeler Site Investigation.

I would also like to extend an additional thanks to JKS Boyles, for arranging the prize for any player hitting a ‘hole-in-one’ – A CAR - which is being kindly sponsored by A.I.P.S. (Autonetic Insurance and Pension Services Ltd). Any money raised from the hole in one competition will be split between two nominated charities.

If you would like to sponsor part of the competition, please get in touch with me directly via email: Joel@britishdrillingassociation.co.uk

Staying on the topic of social events, plans for the 2022 BDA Dinner Dance & Awards are also well underway, and now that details of the Awards element have been published, I’d like to reiterate that sponsorship opportunities are available for all BDA members. The event is the highlight of the BDA’s social calendar and a great opportunity to celebrate the absolute best of the drilling sector! So why not align your brand with the best of the sector and support the event? Details can be found later in the newsletter.

I would like to close my note by offering a warm welcome to Onsen Energy Ltd – the BDA’s newest member. Great to have you on board!
