35mm education filmstrip in a keychain
We wanted to get you original French cinema 35mm film. This proved to be a hard endeavour since movies are now shot digitally and original 35mm film is extremely safeguarded. We looked everywhere, we called in favors, tried to move mountains and found that getting our hands on actual film and desecrating it would have illegal. Nonetheless, we didn't give up, we just renovated the idea and found something a little bit more personal.
Back in the 50s and 60s, French children were shown educational slides in school and we thought the film would be just perfect for our box. Eventually, after searching high and low we found a treasure trove at a school located in the region of one of us.
We thought it would be a great way to get you further connected with FrenchBox's origins. The keychains you will find in your box are personally assembled by us with images from the film. Each keychain will feature a personal story by displaying French folktales such as La Fontaine, cartoons, healthy living lifestyles, banking explained in images for children and much more memorabilia from the 50's in France! The personal hand-cut film keychains are just our little way of showing our dedication to every single one of you.
A short history of education filmstrips (Films fixes)
Education Fimstrips are a mix of cinema and photography and were produced from the 1940s through the 1960s in France. These were 20 to 50 inches long, showing on average 40 to 50 views (drawings, diagrams, photos, text). These filmstrips were since replaced by slides in the 1970s.
The most common themes of these filmstrips were entertainment, general education, news and religion. They are stored in protective cylindrical casings made of cardboard, aluminium or plastic.A teacher's booklet would often accompany these filmstrips, presenting the series, its author and provided additional explanations on the views.
An interesting particularity of these filmstrips is that they are printed "positive" instead of the photography "negative" rolls. Some of the filmstrips were sponsored by French companies like Nestle, Danone, Renault or Nivea.
Each of these filmstrips has a story about French culture, look up yours on this page.

Authentic French Riviera Postcard
Finally we've saved the best for last. Every FrenchBox this month contains an extremely valuable surprise. We're including authentic French postcards from the French Riviera in and around Cannes.
We spent copious amounts of time gathering postcard collections just to obtain a sufficiently large collection for all of our subscribers. The postcards we were fortunate enough to locate date from 1900 to 1960. Some of them have been circulated and contain original calligraphy, stamps and singular stories.
Each card has a story, now it's your turn to add your story to its repertoire. We like to think we are writing you into history with each card. Whether in black and white or in color you're sure to get a glimpse into the life of past Cannes attendees or French Riviera visitors. Their story is now yours, our loyal starlets.
A short history of French postcards
Postcards started circulating in France around 1873. The price was 10c each and postcards were produced and controlled by the government. Privately-produced postcards were introduced in 1889 at the Paris World Fair and the Eiffel Tower inauguration.
Success was quick: up to 30 million postcards were sent in 1884, 100 million were produced in 1910 and 800 million in 1914. The popularity of postcards in France declined after the first world war when prices went up and quality went down.
The hidden language of stamps
Until the 1920's, some postcards could be stamped at half-price but had a 5-word limit. This lead to creative ways of adding an additional message: the way the stamp was affixed told an extra story, sometimes a little risqué.
What makes a postcard valuable?
- Overall state : the general state of a postcard must be almost perfect for maximum value: no blemish, fold or stains.
- Theme: A determining factor to assess the value. Certain topics are particularly searched after like certain artists, trades, aviation, automobile, boats, famous people.
- Scarcity: a postcard of the Eiffel tower is much more common than one of a small village in Western France. The number of prints of each postcard (when documented) will play a role in assessing the value.
- Buyer's personal preferences: The ultimate value of a postcard is the price someone is willing to pay for it. This price will depend on buyers' preferences: Is there a stamp on the front or the back, is the calligraphy detailed, does the card tell a nice story, etc.
