City Breaks Ground at Alameda Point

the City of Alameda and its private partner, Alameda Point Partners, LLC, (APP) celebrated the first phase of a $1 billion mixed-use, transit-oriented waterfront development at the gateway to Alameda Point. The 68-acre development is located on the former Naval Air Station Alameda, which closed more than 20 years ago.

Projected to cost $500 million, the first phase of the project consists of 673 housing units, including 130 units of affordable housing for low and very-low income households, and an additional 310 units affordable to middle-income households. The site will also offer eight acres of parks and open space, and nearly 100,000 square feet of resident-serving retail, dining and maker spaces. Space for community events and gatherings are also planned.

Major infrastructure improvements on the 30-acre phase one project include new water, sewer, electrical and gas lines, newly paved streets with bike and transit lanes and bulkhead improvements on Seaplane Lagoon for a new ferry terminal.

One-Way Car Share Launches on the Main Island of Alameda

On Thursday, May 17, Gig Car Share vehicles were launched on the main island of Alameda, ready to be used for one-way trips between the main island of Alameda, core East Bay communities, and two San Francisco locations. At this time, Gig Car Share is not currently launching on Bay Farm Island. Carsharing aims to reduce car ownership and provide greater transportation choices. Carsharing is not new to Alameda, as the island already has “dedicated space” carsharing at four locations with Getaround (formerly City CarShare), along with peer-to-peer carsharing, which allows Alamedans to rent their private vehicles to neighbors. This agreement represents a third type of carsharing called one-way or point-to-point, where members are able to rent available vehicles and end trips anywhere in designated areas.

Alameda Municipal Power Earns Two National “Top 10” Rankings for Alameda Green

For the third year in a row, Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) has been recognized as a national industry leader for its voluntary green power program, Alameda Green. AMP has earned two separate top 10 rankings from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the U.S. Department of Energy's primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research.

Alameda Green gives residents and businesses the option to match up to 100 percent of their monthly electricity use with renewable energy sourced from wind, biogas and solar projects. To date, the program’s participants include more than 3,400 residents and 75 businesses.

The first ranking highlights AMP’s high percentage of customers participating in Alameda Green in 2017. With 8.9 percent of Alameda’s customers participating in the program in 2017, AMP earned a 7th place ranking on the list of national utilities with the highest green power program participation rate. AMP’s 2017 ranking shows a jump in participation from 2016, when the utility ranked 8th in this category.

The second ranking showcases AMP’s green power megawatt-hour (MWh) sales in comparison with total utility MWh sales, where the utility placed 9th with 3.2 percent of total utility megawatt-hour (MWh) sales coming from Alameda Green in 2017.

“We are excited to learn the 2017 NREL results and we want to thank the Alameda community for supporting this program,” AMP General Manager Nicolas Procos said. “As a community-owned utility, we are pleased to provide this option to our customers, who want to do all they can to protect the environment.”
