Hello Braillist,

I'm very excited to announce our next Bristol Braillists meeting on the evening of Monday 30th March where we will be investigating Unified English Braille (UEB) and the impact it will have on the Braille community. There will also be the opportunity to test the brand new Midas Braille glove prototype which is getting its first public outing at our Reading Braillists meeting tomorrow, Saturday 21st March.

The Bristol meeting will equip you with all you need to know about UEB. We'll explore the potentially huge benefits in all English speaking countries using the same Braille code, with inter library lending, simplified computer translation and reduced ambiguity to name but a few. But we'll also examine the challenges - how will schools, publishers and transcription houses make a smooth transition, and what does the change mean for adult Braille readers at home?

James Bowden, chair of the UK Braille coding and standards group and Braille expert with the RNIB, will be guiding us through the new standard - dispelling myths and answering questions, as well as giving us physical examples to compare and uncovering how much of a change it really is.

Do join us for what is sure to be a fascinating look at one of the biggest changes in Braille's 200 year history. The meeting will run from 6pm to 8pm (please note the earlier start time) in the Watershed's Pervasive Media Studio on Monday 30th March and we'll be gathering in the Cafe Bar from 5.15pm. Please let me know if you would like to attend and I will send you full details.

There is still the opportunity to join us for our first Braillists meeting in Reading tomorrow, Saturday 21st March. We'll be testing two innovative new Braille technologies - it will be the first public outing of the Midas Braille glove prototype that transforms Braille to the whole hand for those with finger sensitivity problems, and we'll also have the multi-line Canute Braille ebook reader prototype. The meeting will run from 2.30pm to 4.30pm and I'll be meeting people at Reading station from 1.45pm to take a bus to the venue at 2pm. If you'd like to attend do get in touch and I'll send you all the details, please include a mobile phone number to help find each other.

I hope all is well with you and look forward to meeting you at a Braillists event sometime soon.

Best regards,

Steph
