Hello Braillist,

Along with very merry seasons greetings, I'm excited to bring you news of three Braillists meetings happening in January in Dublin, Dorking (Surrey) and Bristol.

The Dublin meeting will be a great opportunity to come meet Ed from Bristol Braille and try the Canute Braille ebook reader prototype. It is being hosted in conjunction with the Irish National Braille & Alternative Format Association and I will be there to discuss the Braillists and our future plans. It will be held on Thursday 15th January from 2pm to 4pm at NCBI on Whitworth Road, Drumcondra. Please note the change of date from the last email. Everybody is welcome but spaces are limited so please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in attending and I will send you full details including public transport information.

We will also be taking the Canute prototype to visit Sight for Surrey in Dorking on Wednesday 28th January from 10am to 12pm. The meeting is open to all but if you are interested in attending please let me know soon and I will ensure you are kept updated as we confirm the details.

Following another great Braillists meeting in Bristol last Saturday, where we met the innovative Fowler tactile reading machine, we will be holding a history of Braille technology meeting on Monday 19th January from 6.30pm to 8pm. We would like to make this a very hands-on experience and so are looking to include as many examples of Braille machines as we can. If you have a piece of Braille technology that you would be happy to bring along or lend please let me know. Some suggestions include Mountbatten Brailler, Pyke-Glauser Braille Machine, Lavender Brailler, Marburg Tape Printer and Erika Picht Portable Braillewriter but we are also interested in other tactile reading machines including Optacons and the like.

We are starting to develop a website to make finding out about our meetings easier and help make the newsletter a little more succinct and informative. I will post full details when we have something up and running.

I would like to thank you all for your interest and support. 2014 has been a great start for the Braillists and it looks like 2015 is going to be a busy and exciting year!

Wishing you a very happy Christmas and a great New Year.
Best regards,
