Your Weekly Update from the Braillists Foundation

Your Braille Library Questions Answered, Tuesday at 7:30 PM

RNIB, which operates one of Europe’s largest braille lending libraries, has recently announced changes to the way books will be produced from April 2021. Individual volumes will be more portable, offer freshly embossed braille and are recyclable.

Since the announcement, there has naturally been much discussion on the Braillists Forum and elsewhere about what these changes will mean for braille readers in the UK and around the world.

Reminder: The Census Explained, Friday at 6:00 PM

A census is taking place in England and Wales this Sunday (21 March). This is an event which usually only happens once every ten years, and it’s really important that everyone in these two countries can be accounted for on a census form.

But what if you’re blind or partially sighted? We know there is a great deal of anxiety in the community about the accessibility of the census, especially against the backdrop of COVID-19 and the difficulties that this brings in terms of finding sighted help. However, we also know that a great deal is being done to ensure that the census is as easy to complete as possible. The online form has been designed with accessibility in mind, you can receive your access code for the form by text message if you find it difficult to read your post, and you can even call the Census Team and complete the form over the telephone if using the internet is just too daunting for you.

To find out more, join us at 6:00 PM this Friday 19th March, where a team of technology and accessibility experts will be ready to answer all of your questions. You don’t need to register in advance, but if there’s a particular question you’d like us to answer or you’d like us to send you a reminder email on the day, please just email us on help@braillists.org.

This session will replace our Friday Open Forum for one week only. If you usually come to our Friday evening session, the same details will work. For everyone else, they are:

Claim your Free Braille Equipment!

We believe every blind person has the right to the tools they need to read and write braille.

So we're excited that we're offering free braille reading, writing and learning equipment for you, whether you're an expert or a beginner. If you are interested in attending a master-class, or have done in the past, then in exchange we can send you some of the kit below. (N.B. grant conditions currently limit this to the UK and Ireland.)

  • A4 braille frame.
  • Stylus.
  • Samples of A4 braille paper.
  • 8-cell braille word forming block (for learners).
  • Tactile abacus.

For introductions to using this kit, please see recordings of our previous master-classes, available at braillists.org/media or via the Braillecast podcast.

To claim your equipment, or apply on someone else's behalf, email equipment@braillists.org or telephone 020 3893 3392 with the following:

  • Request which of the above to send and which not to send.
  • Confirm that you or the recipient are interested in attending our Braille master-classes, by telephone or Zoom.
  • Confirm the British or Irish postal address. As the package is too large to go through a standard letter-box, please give us directions as to where to leave it, should you not be in.
  • You can keep kit as long as you like. However please confirm that this equipment will not be resold and that you or the recipient are happy to donate it to another braille reader when/if it is no longer wanted (or post it back to the Braillists).

Postage dates depend on stocks so please be patient. For data protection reasons, your address will only be held by our partner, Vision Through Sound, and will not be seen by other Braillists members. If you are not from the UK or Ireland, you can ask on the Braillists' email forum for advice on similar resources in your country.
