AAO News

Be sure to save the date (November 2-4) for this year's Design Matters Conference in Miami.  Join us for three days of presentations, tours, and networking events, bringing together architecture center leaders with top designers, journalists, politicians, and community advocates. Registration will open next month, along with an initial list of featured speakers as well as an Open Call for AAO members interested in submitting topics for presentation. Mark your calendars now!

Meet AAO Assistant Director Laura Kozak

Laura Kozak joined the AAO staff last month after seven years with the Strategic Management Society (SMS), a nonprofit academic organization focused on the development and dissemination of insights on the strategic management process. Laura was responsible for planning SMS conferences, which took place at locations throughout the world and ranged in size from 100-1,200 attendees. She also managed membership services for SMS's 3,000 members. A native of Pennsylvania and a self-proclaimed history buff, Laura holds a Bachelors of History from the University of Illinois-Chicago. She is excited about working with AAO members and encourages you to reach out to her at

General News

  • New generations of designers are joining forces to address global challenges through the Time for Impact program, which was announced during the opening of the 2016 Venice Biennale.  Following the well-trodden path of Architecture for Humanity and others, this program's online platform works as an architectural time bank and kickstarter tool, promoting urgent challenges in the built environment in need of design expertise, spatial know-how, and funding. Creative people from all over the world are invited to pledge their time and collectively boost socially relevant projects.
  • Nonprofit advocacy group Transit Columbus aims to make Columbus, Ohio a more pedestrian-friendly city one parklet at a time. Nice article proving small steps can lead to wonderful longer term results!
  • Architects are the subject of the new film "The Architect" due to be released later this year. Read what the Angry Architect thinks about it (hint: the review is far from glowing).
