AAO Re-Opening Survey Results and June Meeting

Thanks to all who completed AAO’s recent Re-Opening Readiness Survey. Twenty percent of the AAO member base responded to this questionnaire assessing the state of our respective organizations’ near-future planning, and concerns around preparing for re-opening to staff, the public, and the eventual arrival of in-person and hybrid programming.

This spring, organizations are clearly gearing up to welcome staff back to on-site work; in fact, 73% of survey respondents report that some staff are already regularly working in the office and 27% of organizations anticipate a full return of their workforce to the office by fall.

Planning for in-person programs and events is well underway; this summer, 86% of respondents report they will be conducting some manner of in-person programs (we presume this is largely outdoor activities). Not surprisingly, respondents’ biggest area of curiosity and foreseeable challenge is hybrid programming (events concurrently offered to in-person and live-streamed audiences), citing the technical complexities, added costs, and skill gaps in their current workforce.

For a more details and key data points gathered from this survey, please visit our website. And a reminder that the AAO network is here to support one another as we navigate this new landscape—if you’d like to connect with peer organizations around the specifics of their re-opening plans, please contact us at

Don't forget to register for the June 3 Public Programs Network meeting, as planning hybrid programs will be part of that meeting agenda.
