BSA Request for Innovations (RFI) and more opportunities

• BSA launches the inaugural Request for Innovations (RFI) with the tagline "How might we do architecture differently?" Anyone can propose a 6-18 month initiative. Deadline: Jan. 20. Read the interview with the team behind the BSA RFI. 
• Open call: Be part of the creative team of MODEL. Barcelona Architectures Festival 2023, led by Artistic Director Eva Franch i Gilabert. Deadline: Jan. 16.
• Open call: Apply to join the New Architecture Writers 2023 cohort supported by Architecture Foundation and The Architectural Review. Deadline: Jan. 6.
• Call for Entries: 2023 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers on the theme of "Uncomfortable." Deadline: Feb. 15.
• Fellowship: Race and Gender in the Built Environment of the American City 2023–2025 at the University of Texas at Austin. Application review will begin Jan. 2 and will continue until the position is filled.
• Apply now for AIA Baltimore's CivicLAB 2023. Gain the skills to be a citizen architect. Deadline: Jan. 18.
• Given the high levels of press interest in the exhibition “Long Life, Low Energy,” RIBA issues an open call for more works that advance the design principles of the circular economy to augment the exhibition. Deadline: Jan. 16.

The Year in Review / The Year Ahead

• Architect's Newspaper's looks back at the top news stories of 2022, which include AI design platforms, architects unionizing, and legislation to cut greenhouse-gas emissions.
• Also looking back at 2022, here are recommendations of architecture and design books from Dezeen, Curbed, Architect's Newspaper, and Smithsonian.
• Looking ahead, here are the 2023 books on architecture and urban design from Actar Publishers (catalog pictured above). 
• Also looking forward to 2023, ArchDaily lists 12 upcoming architecture events, which include AAO Member the Chicago Architecture Biennial and the UIA World Congress this July in Copenhagen, of which AAO will take part.

• The new Art Omi kids guide encourages a richer experience of the installations and environment of the sculpture garden.
• Architecture Foundation of Oregon welcomes new executive director Erica Rife.
• A team of students from Tuskegee University's Department of Architecture won first place in the National Organization of Minority Architects Student Design Competition, making history as the first HBCU to win the competition since its inception in 2013.
• At Harvard Graduate School of Design, American Architecture (Model) is a temporary pavilion in front of Gund Hall and the exhibition Grand Paris Express: Reconfiguring the City through Radical Infrastructure, which celebrates the 14th Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design winner, is on view in the Druker Design Gallery.
• Curbed offers a profile of Rosalie Genevro, who will be stepping down from leading the Architectural League after 37 years.
• Alaska Design Forum celebrates 30 years with a return to in-person events.
• AAO welcomes new member Jasim Azhar (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia).

Space and power

• Columbia GSAPP contends with the legacy of colonialism with a studio taught by Nathalie Frankowski and Cruz Garcia (directors of WAI Architecture Think Tank and founders of the alternative education platform LOUDREADERS) and work by Professor Emanuel Admassu (AD-WO) that explores "how people claim space in contexts that inherently negate their lives."
• The conceptual design for a memorial honoring the deceased migrant workers who built the Qatar World Cup stadium includes one concrete block for each of the 6,751 fatalities.
• The installation ‘La ropa sucia se lava en casa’ (Dirty clothes are washed at home) by architect Tatiana Bilbao at the National Gallery of Victoria examines the ways that space is shaped by dominant ideologies.
