ABC and National Medical Association (NMA) Joint Symposium
ABC at NMA 2016More than 150 people from around the U.S. attended the ABC/NMA Joint Symposium on August 1 at the JW Marriott LA Live in Los Angeles. The event was chaired by Drs. Barbara Hutchinson, Felix Sogade and Ayotunde Dokun. This year’s theme was “Cardiology Update 2016: Managing Cardiovascular Risk and Heart Failure in Primary Care” and featured three leading experts—Drs. Karol Watson (keynote speaker), John Fontaine and Elizabeth Ofili—sharing pivotal insights with the audience. View the photo gallery here.

ABC Founder Dr. Richard Allen Williams is 117th President of National Medical Association
Dr. WilliamsCongratulations to Dr. Richard Allen Williams who was installed as the 117th President of the National Medical Association on August 2 during their Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly in Los Angeles. Click here to read Dr. Williams' acceptance speech. 
Inaugural Dr. Richard Allen Williams Founders Lecture
Dr. Karol Watson presented the inaugural Founders Lecture at the joint ABC/NMA symposium held August 1 in Los Angeles. The lecture was titled "Emerging Evidence for Reducing Cardiovascular Events Beyond Statin Therapy: Guidelines for Physicians."  Dr. Watson is director of the UCLA Barbra Stresisand Women’s Heart Health Program at UCLA, co-director of the UCLA Program in Preventative Cardiology, and director of the UCLA Fellowship Program in Cardiovascular Diseases.

The 2016 Inaugural Dr. Richard Allen Williams Founders Lecture honors the founder of the Association of Black Cardiologists, the principles upon which the ABC was founded, and Dr. Williams’ outstanding career as an educator, clinician, mentor, and advocate for minority health and diversity in medicine.
New Career Focus for Dr. Yele Aluko
Dr Yele AlukoDr. Yele Aluko has accepted a new opportunity with Ernst & Young as an executive director within the leadership team of their national healthcare advisory business unit. In his new role, he will support healthcare organizations and physicians nationwide, through cost optimization, workforce optimization, health systems deployment, physician strategy and transaction strategy.  Dr. Aluko is deeply committed to local and national advocacy efforts to address the issue of healthcare disparities within racial, ethnic and gender minority populations in the United States. His last day as senior vice president of heart and vascular services at Novant Health will be October 5. Congratulations Dr. Aluko!
Fellows Representative Joins Board of Directors
Dr IlonzeDr. Onyedika J. Ilonze was recently elected to the ABC Board of Directors as the Fellows Representative.  He is a Cardiology Fellow at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute in Roanoke, Virginia.
Coronary Care Unit at LAC + USC Medical Center to be Named in Honor of ABC Founding Member
Dr HaywoodThe Coronary Care Unit at LAC + USC Medical Center will be renamed the Dr. L. Julian Haywood Coronary Care Unit in honor of his 60 years of dedicated service to patients, medical students, interns, residents, and cardiology fellows. He was one of the first cardiologists in the United States to understand, develop, and promote the idea of a Coronary Care Unit. His leadership positions include directorships of the ECG (Electrocardiography) Department, the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, the Cardiology Clinics, and the Coronary Care Unit for 18 years (from 1966-1984). He is also highly regarded for his medical research which has focused on racial disparities in cardiovascular disease and medicine. Congratulations Dr. Haywood!

Congratulations to Dr. Yancy
Dr YancyIn June, Dr. Clyde Yancy presented the second annual L. Julian Haywood MD Visiting Professorship in Cardiovascular Medicine lecture, titled "Heart Failure in African Americans: A Journey from Bench to Bedside to Community." The University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine established the lecture in 2015 to honor Dr. Haywood.

Earlier this year, Dr. Yancy was recognized in the first ever round of approved Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA) members with the distinguished designation Fellowship of the Heart Failure Society of America (FHFSA). Fellowship recognition is bestowed for professional achievement and contributions to the society. The addition of FHFSA alongside other professional titles exemplifies knowledge of heart failure issues and valuable professional experience. 
Dr. Onwuanyi Honored
Dr. OnwuanyiCongratulations to Dr. Anekwe Onwuanyi who was also recognized with the most distinguished designation the Heart Failure Society of America can offer: Fellowship of the Heart Failure Society of America (FHFSA).  Go here for more information.

Dr. Onwuanyi was also appointed to the Oversight Advisory Committee (OAC) for the American Heart Association’s Strategically Focused Research Network on Heart Failure. The OAC will provide external oversight for the research network's award and serve in an advisory capacity to the research centers.
Dr. Luther T. Clark Honored
Dr. ClarkDr. Luther T. Clark was doubly honored recently when he received the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award from the National Medical Fellowships at their 70th anniversary celebration held at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City. He also received an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center at its commencement exercises held at Carnegie Hall. Congratulations Dr. Clark!

Dr. JacksonDr. Larry Jackson, II, Duke University fellow, is the 2016 winner of the Dr. Jay Brown Best Abstract Competition. His submission was titled “The effectiveness of improved ICD programming by race: A MADIT-RIT sub-study.”

ABC Members Recognized for Superior Contributions at ACC.16
Drs. Kim Allan Williams and Paul L. Douglass received the ultimate in recognition, the Master of the American College of Cardiology (MACC), during ACC’s annual convocation in Chicago. They were recognized for superior contributions to the ACC's goals and programs and for serving the College with distinction. Congratulations Dr. Williams and Dr. Douglass! (Pictured above are Drs. Dr. Joseph Robinson Honored 
Dr RobinsonDr. Joseph R. Robinson was named as Washington, DC Hall of Fame Physician of the Year for 2016.  He was the former chief/head of Greater Southeast Community Hospital in Washington, DC and is currently Senior Attending of Medicine/Cardiology at Medstar Washington Hospital Center. He was honored at a formal ceremony in Washington. Congratulations Dr. Robinson!
ABC Members Attend 43rd Annual Congress of the Egyptian Society of Cardiology
Drs. Robert Gillespie and Mahfouz El Shahawy attended the 43rd Annual Congress of the Egyptian Society of Cardiology held in Cairo, Egypt.  Dr. Shahawy presented his novel findings from the cardiovascular prevention program in Sarasota, Florida.  Dr. Gillespie presented "Hypertension in High Risk Populations" and chaired several sessions.  After the Congress, they enjoyed tours of the Nile River, Luxor and Aswan.
