Replacement Levy for Schools Coming Up

Cheney Public Schools' Educational Programs and Operational Levy is up for a renewal/replacement vote in the special election on February 13th. These levy dollars make up the difference between what it costs to operate schools and what the state pays. As the state's new educational property tax dollars come in, the local levy rate will decrease over time.
This vote continues funding for previously voter approved operational funding. Learn more or contact

CMA Election of Officers

Due to unusual circumstances, we ended 2017 needing to elect new officers for all four positions. Each position has a candidate running unopposed: Douglas LaBar for Chair, Debbie Anderson for Vice Chair, Kim Best for Secretary, and Kristin Zitterkopf for Treasurer. A ballot was emailed to each CMA member, if you haven't voted you can click here
Voting ends January 20th. Announcement of election on Monday, January 22nd.

West Plains Christmas Tree Gala a Success

Lori Musgrave reported that December's Christmas Tree auction had a great response with every one of the allotted raffle tickets sold. The dinner on December 23rd was well attended, with Mayor Trulove drawing the raffle winners during a Facebook Live event. All of the trees were won by Cheney residents.
For 2018, a committee has been formed to start planning for the 12 Days of Christmas themed event. A Cheney 501c3 organization will be chosen to work with the committee and benefit from the raffle. A 13th tree will be our community's "tree of sharing" to benefit children and seniors.

Ideas for 2018

We had a discussion on how CMA can help each other, improve our visibility, and do positive things for the community. Following are some of the ideas members talked about:
  • CMA is talking with City of Cheney about holiday decorating/lights that create a cohesive, inviting, and festive look to our town. Ideas and financing are under discussion.
  • Migrating CMA by-laws and organization into a full chamber of commerce for our community.
  • Bringing back the CMA new business welcome and welcome packet.
  • Make sure our members learn about new members, and list current members in summary email.
  • Possible coop advertising through mass mailing several times a year. It costs about $2,000, but divided by 4-6 businesses brings the cost of reaching residents to an affordable rate.
  • The same coop advertising can be done through inserts in the Cheney Free Press, Easterner, or online venues.
  • Perhaps hold a CMA "Speed dating" business to business meeting to get to know our fellow members and learn about their products and services.
  • Hold a (or several) "Nonprofit Showcase" to learn about the nonprofit members, with a bit of fundraising help as well.
This is just a short list of a longer discussion. Whether you come to our meetings or not, your ideas on how we can grow CMA and make it a better organization to serve you and our community are most welcome. Replay to this email or write to
