From the Editor's Desk:

Happy Friday!

The last few days have been overcast and rainy, which means it has been cooler, which I personally love. Unfortunately, the Mercado del Pueblo has been cancelled today due to the rain, but it should be up and running again next week.

If you missed the SayulitAnimal fundraiser last Saturday night, make sure to plan to attend next year. The event sold out quickly and was great fun. A special thanks to Bliss, River Cafe Sayulita, Aaleyah's, La Rustica, and Latitude 20 for your participation.

Thank you for reading this edition of El Sayulero,

Stacey Elkins

Being a Local in Sayulita:
An Interview with Ruben RodriguezTrujillo

Ruben Rodriguez Trujillo was born and raised in Sayulita. His grandfather, who had been mining gold in San Sebastian, moved here with his family in the 1930’s, when the gold mining came to an end. His family was one of the first of seven families to live in Sayulita. In 1987, at the age of 17, Ruben moved to Los Angeles, where he stayed until 2005. He then moved back to Sayulita, where he has lived ever since with his wife, Monica, his 19-year-old son, also named Ruben, and his 12-year-old daughter, America.

Making a Positive Change
in Sayulita: Sara Briner

Photo by Camilla Fuchs with Camilla Fuchs Photography

Sara Briner, one of the founders of SayulitAnimals, was born in Spain and raised in Switzerland. Thirteen years ago, she left her job as a dental hygienist, and her life in Switzerland behind, looking for her place in the sun. She traveled for two years through Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Guatemala, and Mexico. Eleven years ago, she drove into Sayulita and instantly knew this was where she belonged, and she has been here ever since. Upon adopting her first puppy, Esmeralda, it opened her eyes to the needs of the homeless dogs and cats on the streets of Sayulita, as well as the mistreatment of some of these animals. At the time, she had no knowledge of animal welfare, but knew she couldn’t live here without actively helping.

An Interview with Steven Larios: Owner of River Café

Steven Larios, the owner of River Café, is no stranger to Sayulita. Born in Puerto Vallarta, he has been visiting Sayulita since he was 8 years old, and has long since enjoyed the local surf scene and community. With his history in Sayulita, it’s no wonder he chose this town to open River Café Sayulita last December, which is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Shelly Yogev Labovitz
Making the Move to Sayulita

Shelly Yogev Labovitz was born in Jerusalem, Israel. Just after her third birthday, her family moved to the states for her father to do his infectious disease fellowship in Chicago. While the original plan had been to stay in Chicago for only a year, her family has been there ever since. Shelly also continued to live in Chicago until 2006, when she and her partner moved to Sayulita.

Why Did You Choose
Sayulita for Your Vacation?

Robert Anderson & Cecily Sweet
San Francisco, California

Because it's cute. Our co-traveler suggested Sayulita.

Susan and Robert
Roberts Creek, Canada

We've been coming to Sayulita many years and we love the energy and the vibrancy. It's a special place to come in Mexico.

Tim Milligan
Duluth, Michigan

I like Sayulita because of the beach, the surfing, and there's not a lot of "us" and "them." It not just a tourist town. I like it so much that I'm actually building a house here now.

Jeff and Maria Groves
Salt Lake City, Utah

It's tradition. We've been coming to Sayulita for many years. And the surfing, of course.

Marie
Millet, Canada

We just drove to Sayulita one day when we were vacationing in Bucerias and thought it was more what we were looking for.

An Interview with Architect Oliver

It was during early travels throughout Europe and the U.S. that Oliver De La Cueva first decided he wanted to become an architect. Having called Sayulita home for over a year now, but originally hailing from Cuernavaca, Mexico, Oliver, owner of Architect Oliver, has been an architect and builder for over 23 years.

Movement + Calisthenics X in Sayulita

I’ve been to a lot of exercise classes in my time, but knew immediately that the Movement + Calisthenics X in Sayulita class, one with a strong gymnastics foundation, taught by Daniel Spencer, is one of a kind. It was Tuesday morning at 9:15 a.m. and I was at Quilombo of Sayulita, participating in the warm up, moving my neck in slow movements forward and back, like a turtle peeping its head out of its shell. It sounds easy, but it’s really not, making this small motion without moving the rest of your body. As we continued warming up, Daniel, a certified personal trainer, explained how we can learn to move more efficiently by mastering the ability to make small body movements.

Pet of the Week

I'm Luna, and was, along with my "brother" Peluche, abandoned by my owners. And by abandoned I mean that they moved away and left us behind. Of course after a few days without food and water we started crying, and thank God an animal rescuer heard us and saved us. Now we need a new home. We are both friendly and sociable. Consider us please!
