From the Editor's Desk:

Happy Friday!

Calling all Sayuleros! Tomorrow, Saturday, February 14th, Riviera Nayarit is sponsoring a beach clean up at 10:00 AM. They will be providing gloves, bags, and water. Please bring your own cup or bottle. Meet up in front of El Break to participate.

Galen Wathen has organized the Rio Brigade, which is a group committed to picking up garbage in Sayulita on a weekly basis. They have cleaned the river, the beach, the ball field, and other areas of the town. Join in this effort and meet up with this group for coffee and clean up at 10:00AM every Monday at River Cafe.

Costa Verde is having their annual fundraiser, Mexi Gras, this Tuesday. Read more about it below and make sure to purchase your ticket before it is too late!

Mark your calendars and save the date for the annual Pro Sayulita general meeting on March 4th.

Sayulita has become a popular location for destination weddings. With the ocean, jungle and breathtaking beauty that surrounds us, it is no wonder. Because so many couples choose Sayulita to say, "I do," we have decided to do a series of interviews with couples who have gotten married in Sayulita, and also showcase some of the amazing wedding planners in town. This El Sayulero brings you the first interview in this series.

Thank you for reading this edition of El Sayulero,

Stacey Elkins

Whale Watching with
Sayulita Entourage

“Look, look! Over there! There! Right there! Ooooh, wow!”  It was Thursday and I was sitting in a panga on a humpback whale watching excursion with Sayulita Entourage.  It was a slightly overcast day, with the sun making an appearance from time to time. There was a gentle breeze in the air and the Punta de Mita bay was flat and calm. Fish were jumping as our captain, Felix, steered our boat out into the bay, and already we could see a whale breaching in the horizon.

An Interview with Regis Cadena of Fishing Sayulita

Regis Cadena operates the aptly named Fishing Sayulita, though he provides several other additional services, on his charter panga boat, Mahi.

How long have you been a fisherman? Well I grew up fishing with my dad. At the age of 9 I was taking time on the weekends to go commercial fishing...snapper, bottom fishing, and every once in awhile, we'd do long line fishing for Dorado. That's how we would make income for the family

A Message from Pro Sayulita

Photo by Ed Dorsett with Wicked Fotos

What makes us love our one-of-a-kind Sayulita?

The beautiful, clean beaches;
Lush jungle, great for hiking & horseback rides;
Colorful Mexican culture;
Or ALL of the above?

What is it worth to you, your family and your guests to have:
  • Free 24/7 ready response ambulance and paramedics (average cost of an ambulance ride in Canada: $45 to $240; in the U.S.: $2,000).
  • A well-equipped fire station (first responders who speak basic English, carrying the jaws of life), plus lifeguards with rescue boards and a proven track record: 900 medical emergencies handled and 327 rescues in the 2013/14 season.
  • Garbage and recycling services that keep our beach and public roads clean.
  • Continued reductions in crime: Down 90% since our police station opened.

Do you want to return to the days:
  • When it could take an ambulance close to an hour to reach someone in need?
  • When beaches and streets were littered and dirty?

This is a real prospect --
unless we all step up to the plate!

Pro Sayulita provides $120,000 U.S. per year for essential services. Join your fellow supporters, who have already raised $60,000 through the annual Fiesta. Give at any level:
  • Gold -- $500 to $1,000 (or more)
  • Silver -- $365 ($1/day) to $500
  • Bronze -- $50 to $364
  • Friend -- $___________
Supporting Pro Sayulita is easy: Go to www.prosayulita.org  and click “donation.” If you have already given -- thank you for your support!

Tickets on Sale for Live Theater Sayulita's 'Sign of the Times' and 'Driving Miss Daisy'

Live Theater Sayulita returns for the 2015 season, excited about the schedule and the venue, La Luz Fantastica, located at 155 Ave. Revolucion.  LTS will present three one-act plays by the inimitable Shel Silverstein, billed as Signs of the Times on February 26, 27, and 28. Performances will begin at 8 p.m., with two brief intermissions to allow theater-goers to purchase wine, beer and water.

“We should end at about 9:15 so that anyone who wants to get to the San Pancho Musical Festival will be able to catch the last act there,” said Donna Evans-Deyermond, co-producer.

One month later, March 26, 27, and 28, you will be treated to a production of Driving Miss Daisy, the Pulitzer Prize winning show written by Alfred Uhry.

Tickets are on sale at the Mercado del Pueblo in Sayulita on Fridays or at livetheatersayulita@gmail.com. The cost is $200 pesos per person, and you can pay in cash or through PayPal online.

The subject matter in the Silverstein plays is adult-focused, with strong adult language.  For that reason we suggest this performance is not appropriate for anyone under age 16.

Growing Up as a Teenager in Sayulita

Written by Aaleyah Cortez
Grade 8, Costa Verde International School

Sayulita is a place filled with love, colors, creativity, and a lot of people. Most of the people live here and others are tourists. When it is busy season, the town is full of activity.

Pet of the Week

This is Klaus. He lived on the streets of San Vicente. He was lucky enough to be fed occasionally by a local woman who saw him hungry on the street, but then Klaus disappeared for two months. When he returned, just before Christmas 2014, he had a huge open wound on his leg (down to the bone) and ulcers on his legs, penis and behind his eye. Sayulitanimals took him in. He has been getting chemotherapy and treatment for Erlichia. Klaus never knew he was sick! He has been responding miraculously to his treatment (vet could not believe his eyes) and is full of energy. He loves to go for runs and really likes people. He will make a wonderful, loyal friend to someone. Are you ready for the sweetness of Klaus? Unlike Christmas Santa Claus, this Klaus brings joy year round!

Photo of the Week

A few days ago, Camilla came across two tiny baby turtles lying on their backs as she walked the beach just before sunrise. She flipped them over, their heads pointed toward the ocean, and let them go on their way.
