From the Editor's Desk:

Happy Friday!

Sayulita continues to get a lot of wonderful press. Caitlyn Row wrote, Travel: A Colorado connection to Sayulita, Mexico, which is featured in the Post Independent. Another article about Festival Sayulita, Movies and Music in Mexico, was written by Sara Lieberman and featured in The New York Times.

Tickets for Festival Sayulita are currently on sale. This event will take place from Wednesday, January 14th though Sunday, January 18th. This will be an amazing five days of fun, film, music, tequila, surf, and more. Make sure to purchase your ticket before they sell out!

Don't forget that the annual Christmas party for the needy children in the area will be on Monday, December 22nd. This is your last chance to drop off toys for the children at Latitude 20, formerly Don Chow.

Have a wonderful Christmas and happy New Year!

Thank you for reading this edition of El Sayulero,

Get Involved in the
Sayulita Community

Regardless of whether you live in Sayulita or are simply vacationing, there are many ways for one to get involved in our community. KO Marshall, a Sayulita local, put together an impressive pamphlet of volunteer opportunities. The idea originated for her rental property guests so that they could “live it like a local” during their stay in Sayulita. “Guests would see me volunteering, going to a fundraiser event, or ask about our dogs, who are rescues from SayulitAnimals, and they would want to know how they could get involved too,” shared KO.

Grand Opening Fundraiser for
Kid Dedicated Sayuparke

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for the Grand Opening of Sayuparke on Friday the 5th of December. After much work and neighborhood effort, the first dedicated park for the children of Sayulita officially opened, and the kids definitely didn’t waste any time helping themselves to the park’s many attractions. Excitement was at full throttle as the kids ran to and from the climbing structures, one featuring a rock climbing wall and slides, the swingset, a “tree-house,” a mountain made of old tires and sand, and a real boat allowing imaginations to run wild.

Pro Sayulita Fiesta
Ranchero Fundraiser

On Thursday, December 11th, more than 100 people in Sayulita gathered for the Pro Sayulita fundraiser.  This ranchero-themed fiesta started in the late afternoon and was the perfect opportunity to support an invaluable Sayulita organization and to enjoy the company of other people in our community.

An Interview with Martha Diaz

Martha Diaz is a mother of two, the owner of El Corte hair salon, and also an athlete.  In December, she competed in Manzanillo at the Mexican SUP Championship, recognized by the Mexican Surfing Federation (FMS). Martha did extremely well, placing 2nd in Surf, 3rd in Long Distance, and 4th in Sprint Race. Martha tells El Sayulero more about herself, her love of this sport, and competitions in her future.

Mexico SUP Tour and Stand UP
for the Cure Paddle

There will be free clinics for all ages on Saturday from 2pm - 4pm before the paddle out. For the Stand UP for the Cure paddle, at least a $250 peso donation is recommended and will go towards the Stand UP for the Cure Foundation. Boards will be available for use, as well as t-shirts for sale, or will be included as part of the $250 for the paddle out.

On Sunday, the race will be for all ages and abilities. The more kids the better! Relay is free and consists of teams of four and no experience is necessary!

The Mexico Sup Tour is a professional race series that offers elite categories as well as amateur and kids. Sayulita is the third stop of the Tour ager our first race in Zihuatanejo in October and Manzanillo in November.

A special thanks goes out to the race sponsors, Stand Up Paddle Mexico, Sayulita Life, Mi Chaparrita, Avalos Realty, Yah Yah Cafe, Tierra Viva, Revolucion del Sueno, Villas Sayulita and Wicked Fotos.

Hotel Las Graditas

When one walks into Hotel Las Graditas in Sayulita, remnants of the bar that once stood there still remain, adding charm and history to the space. A quick glance up in the lobby reveal two mosaic stained glass chandeliers, housed in a wooden frame, with a single bulb inside each one. The word, Bar, can be seen spelled out on the glass.

The Sayulita Snowbirds Have Returned

Every winter, Sayulita becomes home to a growing number of seasonal residents often referred to as snowbirds. A lot of them come from the United States and Canada, escaping the cold and snow, for a little bit of paradise here in Mexico. Some stay just a few months and others stay the better part of the year, like Gary and Jennifer Culp, and Chuck and Teke Mohill.

Locals Corner: It's an
Aguinaldo Time of Year

The sun is shining brightly, the surf is rolling in, and it is beginning to feel a lot like Christmas in Sayulita. Yes, it is that time of year where one counts one´s many blessings and gives back to those who have been there throughout the past year. While ´tis the season fills you with a moral sense of obligation, in Mexico there is also a legal one-- aguinaldo.

How Will You be Spending Christmas in Sayulita?

Angel Gonzalez
Sayulita

If I stayed in Sayulita, I would barbecue with my boss and his family, but I am going to Guadalajara to spend time with my family.

Kristen Hastings
Denver, Colorado

I may be back in Colorado, but if I'm still in Sayulita, I will be spending Christmas with my father. It has been a long time since we have spent a holiday together.
Nathan Luis Velazquez
Sayulita

Opening presents, spending the day with mommy and daddy, and probably eating a big chicken (turkey).
Cristian Di Natale
Sayulita

It's going to be a quiet day with friends, dogs, presents, a tree, and good food.
Annie Krieger
Sayulita

I've invited some people over who are here in Sayulita by themselves. We're going to have a potluck dinner and I'm supplying the turkey.

Pet of the Week

Hola! I am Sandi, a small female dog who was found abandoned at the gas station in Punta Mita. I am very shy at first, but warm up really quick once I understand that I can trust you. I get along great with other dogs and cats. I am very sweet and enjoy getting my belly rubbed. I am looking for a "furever" home that will never abandon me and will give me a lot of love. Do you have room in your heart and home for a little girl like me?
