hacking through the autumn

Hey, y’all!

At these times of little daylight, it is especially nice to stay busy and fly through your days, but also to reflect and sense togetherness with your community. So crab a hot drink and enjoy the recap of October through the eyes of our startup ecosystem.

As always, there are various initiatives, projects and events coming that we want to tell you about. Firstly, you can still register to the Education Upgrade Hack 2020 taking place 6-8th of November. 6th of November is also the idea submission deadline of TalTech’s Smart City Challenge, where up to 10 large scale pilots can attain funding for addressing urban challenges. Lastly, another unique hackathon is headed our way, as Garage48 Future of Wood 2020 begins 13. november in Tartu.

2 inspiring episodes of the Startup in Estonia podcast have come out over the month. First we sat down with Sandra Särav, head of sustainability of Bolt, and discussed how companies can help save the planet while making a profit. In the most recent episode, we tackled the topic of mental health with Jorgen Matsi and Leelia Rohumaa, both of Pipedrive, an advocate of employee well-being.

October was also home for another successful startup exit, as performance monitoring software Plumbr was acquired by an American company Splunk, exit valuation was rumored to be just shy of €10 million (source: DigiPro). Hefty fundings of €1,2M and €500k were respectively secured by a production digitisation software Eziil and a cyber security company Botguard.

We will end on a proper feel-good story. In last month's newsletter, we called for Estonian startups to register for the AIM Global National Champions League. OriginalMy was chosed to represent Estonia in the competition and they were victorious, securing the first place in the cybersecurity category.

There's beauty in the unknown!
